Summary

Island Peak Climb with Everest Base Camp Trek: Your First Step into Himalayan Mountaineering

If you're ready to take your adventure beyond trekking and into the world of mountaineering, the Island Peak (Imja Tse) climb combined with the Everest Base Camp Trek is the perfect next step. Known as one of the most accessible trekking peaks in Nepal, Island Peak stands just 10 km from the summit of Mt. Everest and offers an awe-inspiring 360° panorama of some of the world’s tallest mountains. This striking peak, connected to the south ridge of Mt. Lhotse Shar, is the most frequently climbed peak in the Himalayas — and for good reason.

Why Island Peak? Among Nepal’s 33 designated “trekking peaks,” Island Peak is widely considered the best introduction to mountaineering for fit and experienced trekkers. While Himalayan climbs should never be underestimated, this trip offers a manageable challenge and an unforgettable window into high-altitude climbing.

Our Adventure Begins Our journey starts in Kathmandu, where we take time to prepare and explore its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From there, a thrilling flight to Lukla launches us onto the classic Everest Base Camp trail, winding through vibrant Sherpa villages and breathtaking landscapes.

To ensure safe acclimatization, we spend two nights in both Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, and continue onward to Everest Base Camp itself — not only for its iconic setting but also to help us adjust to the altitude. A sunrise trek to Kala Patthar provides arguably the best views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse, before we descend to Chhukung to begin our mountaineering challenge.

Climbing Island Peak At Island Peak Base Camp, we prepare with basic climbing skills and equipment training. The summit push begins with a rocky scramble leading to a glacier traverse, where we rope up and don crampons. The glacier is mostly gradual, but care is needed for crevassed areas.

From the base of the headwall, we ascend a steep 100-meter snow and ice slope — up to 45° — to reach a dramatic and exposed summit ridge. The reward? Breathtaking views of Lhotse Shar, the west face of Makalu, the north face of Baruntse, the north ridge of Ama Dablam, and many more Himalayan giants.

  • Day 3

Fly to Lukla & Trek to Phakding – Gateway to Everest

Your Everest region adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel to the domestic airport in Kathmandu. After checking in, you'll board a small aircraft bound for Lukla. Be sure to sit on the left side of the plane for breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas during the 27-minute flight.

Upon landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, you'll feel the cool mountain air and the thrill of setting foot in the heart of the Khumbu region. Here, you'll meet your porter team at a nearby restaurant, where there's time to enjoy a warm cup of coffee while your gear is organized.

With everything in place, your trek begins at Pasang Lhamu Gate, the official start of the Everest trail. The route follows the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, with gentle ascents and descents through scenic mountain terrain. After a lunch stop in Thado Koshi, you’ll continue on to Phakding, where the first day of your trek concludes.

    Trekking time: Approximately 3–4 hours

Accommodation: Local lodge in Phakding Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lukla Flights The primary gateway to the Everest Base Camp Trek is via a flight to Lukla (2840m), which lands at one of the world's most extreme airports: Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Positioned on a narrow plateau above a steep cliff with a short and narrow runway, the flight itself is as thrilling as it is challenging. Weather conditions here are notoriously unpredictable, with visibility shifting rapidly, which adds a layer of excitement to the journey.

Ramechhap Airport During the busy trekking seasons in spring (March, April) and autumn (October, November), Kathmandu Airport faces significant congestion, leading most flights to Lukla to operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, approximately a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu. To avoid this drive, you can opt for a helicopter flight from Kathmandu, though this is an additional expense.

Weather Flights to Lukla are dependent on clear weather and stable conditions. Delays or cancellations are common due to sudden shifts in weather, which may extend your trekking plans by a few days. We recommend adding buffer days to your itinerary to mitigate any disruptions to your return travel plans.

In the event of prolonged delays, a helicopter transfer to Lukla is an alternative, although this incurs additional costs and is not included in the standard trek package. While helicopters can operate in some conditions that planes cannot, extreme weather can ground them as well. In such cases, we will endeavor to arrange a helicopter charter, subject to availability and weather permitting. Please note, helicopter availability is limited and may lead to delays.

We ask for your flexibility and understanding in these situations. If weather conditions prevent flights for an extended period, an alternative is to drive to Tham Danda—a challenging 20-hour journey—and begin the trek from there. This route is prone to difficulties, especially in adverse weather, requiring extra days and considerable patience.

Should conditions make the Everest Base Camp Trek unfeasible, we can redirect to other treks such as Annapurna Base Camp or Langtang Gosainkunda. While these treks do not lead to Everest Base Camp, they offer stunning views and rewarding experiences.

Your cooperation and flexibility are crucial in navigating these complexities, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable trekking experience regardless of the route.

  • Day 4

Trek to Namche Bazaar – Entering the Sherpa Capital

After an early breakfast, your trek continues toward the vibrant and culturally rich Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River valley, with several thrilling suspension bridge crossings, including the iconic Hillary Bridge, one of the highest and most dramatic on the route.

As you ascend, you’ll officially enter Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its natural beauty and diverse alpine ecosystems. Partway through the climb, weather permitting, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mt. Everest — an unforgettable moment on the trail.

The uphill journey is challenging but rewarding. We pause at Chautara for a short break and some energy-boosting snacks like chocolate bars and dried fruits. With determination and steady pacing, we eventually reach the amphitheater-like setting of Namche Bazaar, surrounded by towering peaks and full of character.

    Trekking time: Approximately 5–6 hours

Accommodation: Local teahouse in Namche Bazaar

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5

Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar – Explore & Elevate

Today is our first acclimatization day, a crucial step in preparing for the higher altitudes ahead. Though often called a "rest day," it's an active rest focused on gradual ascent and adjustment to the altitude, which ranges from approximately 3,500 to 4,000 meters.

We begin with a short hike to the Everest National Park Museum, where you’ll gain insights into local culture, wildlife, and mountaineering history. The trail then ascends to Syangboche, and further up to the renowned Hotel Everest View — one of the highest-altitude hotels in the world — offering spectacular close-up views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and more.

Namche Bazaar itself is bustling with energy and charm. As the commercial hub of the Khumbu region, it offers everything from local eateries and bakeries to shops selling trekking gear, souvenirs, and climbing equipment.

For those wanting to explore further, there’s an optional hike to Khumjung, a traditional Sherpa village. Here you can visit an ancient monastery believed to house a Yeti scalp, and also stop by the Hillary School, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary.

We return to Namche in the afternoon to relax and prepare for the journey ahead.

    Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours

Accommodation: Same teahouse in Namche Bazaar

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 6

Trek to Tengboche – Mountains, Monasteries & Moments of Peace

Today we continue our journey toward Tengboche, one of the most scenic and spiritual stops on the trail. The day begins with a gradual traverse across the hillside, offering stunning views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other towering peaks that dominate the skyline.

The trail then descends steadily to Phungi Thenga, a peaceful riverside spot where we pause for lunch. After crossing a picturesque bridge over the river, we begin a challenging uphill climb through rhododendron and pine forests, eventually arriving at Tengboche — perched on a ridge with sweeping mountain vistas.

By the time we reach the top in the late afternoon, the air is cooler and often cloud-covered, as we approach 4,000 meters in altitude. If time and conditions allow, we visit the famous Tengboche Monastery, one of the largest and most revered in the region. Nearby, a small bakery provides warm drinks and sweet treats — a welcome reward after the climb.

Tengboche is surrounded by open space where you might see monks playing football, trekkers setting up camps, and a wide panorama of Himalayan beauty. The next morning offers one of the best opportunities for clear mountain views and morning prayers at the monastery — a peaceful and inspiring way to start the day.

    Trekking time: Approximately 5–6 hours

    Accommodation: Local lodge in Tengboche

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 7

Trek to Dingboche – Into the High Alpine Zone

Today’s trek takes us deeper into the heart of the Khumbu region as we steadily gain 400–500 meters in elevation. The day begins with a descent through Deboche, followed by a scenic crossing over the Imja Khola. From there, we ascend toward Pangboche, a traditional Sherpa village where we stop for lunch.

Afterward, the trail continues upward, gradually leading us to Dingboche, situated at an altitude of 4,410 meters. Upon arrival, the difference in altitude becomes more noticeable, both in the thinner air and the change in vegetation — with only hardy shrubs and alpine flora dotting the rocky landscape.

Dingboche offers close-up views of Ama Dablam and other nearby peaks, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring setting. After a long day of trekking, we check in and take time to rest and acclimatize.

    Trekking time: Approximately 5–6 hours

    Accommodation: Local lodge in Dingboche

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 8

Acclimatization Hike to Chhukung – Breathtaking Views & Essential Altitude Adjustment

Today marks our second acclimatization day — a vital part of the journey to help our bodies adjust to the increasing altitude and reduce the risk of altitude-related illness.

After a nourishing breakfast, we head out on an uphill hike toward Chhukung Valley, located to the north of Dingboche. The trail crosses a small river tributary and gradually ascends, offering spectacular panoramic views of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, and a wide range of Himalayan giants.

From the top of the ridge, we’re surrounded by stunning peaks including Cholatse, Lobuche, Amphu Gyabjen, Nuptse, Makalu, Thamserku, and even the shimmering waters of Chola Tsho Lake. If the small teahouse at the top is open, we’ll enjoy a warm cup of ginger lemon tea with the mountains all around us.

We then retrace our steps back to Dingboche and spend the rest of the day relaxing and allowing our bodies to continue acclimatizing.

    Trekking time: Approximately 3–4 hours

    Accommodation: Local teahouse in Dingboche

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 9

Trek to Lobuche – Memorials, Mountains & Moving Higher

Today we continue our ascent toward Lobuche, gaining elevation as we follow a gradually rising trail past chortens (Buddhist shrines), with ever-expanding views of the surrounding Himalayas.

The path levels out briefly as we walk through a broad valley, leading us to Dughla, our midday rest stop. This area has a few teahouses and resting spots where we pause for refreshments and to catch our breath.

After lunch, the trail becomes more demanding as we climb up to Thukla Pass (Chukpo Lari). This ridge is not only scenic but also deeply moving, as it is home to memorials dedicated to climbers who lost their lives on Everest expeditions. The panoramic views from this point extend beyond Nepal into the Tibetan Himalayas, offering a profound sense of place and perspective.

From there, a rocky and slightly undulating path leads us onward to Lobuche, where dramatic views of Lobuche Peak accompany us. After reaching one of the few teahouses in this high-altitude settlement, it’s time to rest and recover in preparation for tomorrow’s push toward Everest Base Camp.

    Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours

    Accommodation: Local teahouse in Lobuche

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 10

Trek to Gorakshep & Everest Base Camp – Standing at the Foot of a Giant

We begin the day early, leaving Lobuche and making our way along a rugged trail of rocks and dust, with strong winds often sweeping across the Lobuche Pass. After a steady walk, we reach Gorakshep, the last settlement before Everest Base Camp. Upon arrival, we check in at our teahouse — and it's highly recommended to enjoy a bowl of garlic soup, known to ease altitude-related symptoms and aid breathing.

After a short rest and lunch, we set out on the final push to Everest Base Camp. The trail traverses the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, with the sound of ice cracking and shifting from nearby Nuptse adding a dramatic backdrop. The path is challenging, with undulating terrain of ice, rock, and glacial debris, but the reward is monumental: standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain.

After spending time taking in this extraordinary achievement, we return to Gorakshep for the night.

Alternatively, depending on weather and group energy levels, there’s the option to swap the day’s plan by first trekking to Gorakshep and then ascending Kala Patthar in the afternoon. This is a tough climb, but the sunset views from the top — with golden light washing over Everest, Nuptse, and Pumori — are unforgettable. If this route is chosen, the visit to Everest Base Camp will take place the following morning, followed by the descent toward Dingboche.

Trekking time: Approximately 8–9 hours (varies based on chosen plan)

    Accommodation: Local teahouse in Gorakshep

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 11

Sunrise at Kala Patthar & Trek to Dingboche – A View Worth Every Step

Today starts early with a pre-dawn hike to Kala Patthar, one of the best viewpoints in the entire Everest region. As we ascend, we pause at several points — not just to catch our breath and hydrate, but to capture stunning photos of the surrounding peaks bathed in early light.

At the summit, you’ll find weather radar equipment and fluttering prayer flags, all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, and other towering giants of the Himalayas. As the sun rises, the peaks turn golden — an unforgettable moment and a highlight of the journey.

After soaking it all in, we descend to Gorakshep, where we enjoy breakfast at the teahouse. Once rested, we begin our return trek, heading down past Lobuche and Thukla, gradually making our way back to Dingboche.

    Trekking time: Approximately 6–7 hours

    Accommodation: Local teahouse in Dingboche

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 12

Trek to Island Peak Base Camp – Gearing Up for the Climb

Today we make our way to Island Peak Base Camp, a relatively short but scenic trek that brings us closer to the mountaineering phase of our journey. From this point forward, we’ll be camping in tents for the next two nights, with meals prepared by our dedicated expedition staff.

The trail begins with a moderate climb southward, before turning east along the valley contour. We follow a zigzag path beneath the southern flank of the Lhotse Glacier moraine, and continue along a serene streamside trail. Toward the southeast, we catch a glimpse of the Amphu Labtsa pass, a high and remote crossing point.

Eventually, the route winds through a network of glacial moraines from the Imja and Lhotse glaciers, leading us to a wide open area known as Pareshaya Gyab — located just below the southwest face of Island Peak. This is where we will set up our base camp.

After a short rest, your climbing guide will lead a training session covering the essential techniques and use of climbing equipment such as ice axes, crampons, harnesses, ascenders, and ropes. While prior mountaineering experience is not required for Island Peak, this practical training will boost your confidence and readiness for the summit attempt, enhancing both safety and enjoyment.

    Trekking time: Approximately 4 hours

Accommodation: Tented camp at Island Peak Base Camp

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 13

Summit Day – Island Peak Ascent & Descent to Chhukung

We’ve allowed two days for the Island Peak climb to allow flexibility, though weather permitting, most groups successfully summit in one day. The final climbing strategy will be determined by your climbing leader, taking into account weather, snow conditions, and the group's acclimatization and fitness levels.

Typically, the summit push begins with a steep, two-hour ascent from Base Camp to High Camp (5,600m), following a grassy, well-defined trail just below the permanent snowline.

On summit day, we begin very early — around 2:00 AM — to take advantage of calm morning conditions. The route leads up a steep rock gully, moving to the right side and continuing along a narrow ridgeline. Just before the summit ridge, climbers face a steep 100-meter headwall (about 60° in gradient) where fixed ropes are set by the climbing guides to ensure safety, especially in areas with crevasses.

Reaching the summit of Island Peak (6,189m) offers a truly breathtaking reward — a panoramic view of the Himalayan giants:

To the north: Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle (8,410m), and Lhotse Shar (8,383m)

To the east: Makalu (8,475m) and Baruntse (7,129m)

To the south: the iconic Ama Dablam (6,812m)

After celebrating this incredible achievement and capturing the moment, we carefully descend and continue trekking back to Chhukung.

Trekking & climbing time: Approximately 10–11 hours

    Accommodation: Local teahouse in Chhukung

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 14

Contingency Day – Buffer for Weather or Bonus Exploration

It’s always wise to include a buffer day in your itinerary when traveling in high-altitude regions like the Himalayas. This contingency day provides flexibility in case of weather-related delays, such as flight cancellations or schedule changes due to unforeseen conditions.

If everything proceeds as planned and the Island Peak climb is completed on schedule, this day can be used for sightseeing in Kathmandu or for enjoying optional day trips and cultural experiences around the Kathmandu Valley — from ancient temples and heritage sites to local markets and artisan villages.

Accommodation & meals: Will vary based on how the day is used (e.g. trekking vs. Kathmandu stay)

  • Day 15

Trek Back to Namche Bazaar – Descending Through Beauty

Today we begin our descent from Chhukung, retracing our steps along the main trail through Dingboche and Tengboche, before arriving back in Namche Bazaar. With every step downward, the altitude drops and breathing becomes easier, making the walking more comfortable and allowing you to better appreciate the stunning scenery from a new perspective.

Along the way, we take time to soak in the landscapes, forests, and familiar villages now seen with fresh eyes. Upon reaching Namche, there’s time to enjoy a well-earned shower and relax after a long yet rewarding day on the trail.

    Trekking time: Approximately 7–8 hours

Accommodation: Local teahouse in Namche Bazaar

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 16

Trek Back to Lukla – Completing the Journey

Today marks the final day of trekking as we make our way back to Lukla, descending along steep trails that wind through lush hillsides, dense forests, and across suspension bridges spanning mountain rivers and tributaries.

The trail through the lower valleys offers beautiful contrasts — with vibrant rhododendron forests, tall pine trees, and glimpses of snow-capped peaks still visible in the distance. With each step, there's a deep sense of achievement and reflection, having completed both the Island Peak climb and the Everest Base Camp trek.

This final stretch is a chance to take it all in — the landscape, the people, and the journey that’s taken you to some of the most iconic places in the Himalayas.

    Trekking time: Approximately 6–7 hours

    Accommodation: Local lodge in Lukla

    Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 17

Fly Back to Kathmandu – Farewell to the Mountains

This morning, we board a scenic flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, marking the conclusion of our unforgettable Himalayan adventure. Flights usually depart early in the morning, when weather conditions are most favorable and skies tend to be clear.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can take time to rest, refresh, and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve completed — from the Everest Base Camp trail to the summit of Island Peak.

    Flight duration: Approximately 30 minutes

    Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

    Meals included: Breakfast only

  • Day 18

Departure Day – Until We Meet Again

After breakfast and final preparations, a representative from our team will escort you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey. As you depart from Nepal, we bid you a heartfelt farewell — it’s been a pleasure to have you with us.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the adventure and our hospitality, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more unforgettable journeys in the Himalayas.
