Traveling by train is a quintessential Indian experience, offering a unique view of the country.
  • What meals are included in this trip?

  • How large will the group be?

The maximum group size is 16 travellers, with an average of 12.
  • How old must I be to join this trip?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied. For minors travelling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.
  • Is there an extra cost for travelling solo?

Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Exceptions apply to Night 5 in Orchha and Night 6 on the overnight train.
  • Are international flights included in this trip?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour. It is recommended to contact your airline for up-to-date information on check-in times and baggage allowances.
  • What are the visa and entry requirements for my trip?

All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. A valid Indian visa is required prior to the start of the tour. Some nationalities may be eligible for an e-Visa through the official Indian government website (indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html). It is essential to check the most up-to-date visa requirements with your local embassy or consulate. As of February 2026, all non-Indian nationals entering India must complete an e-Arrival Card online within 3 days of arrival.
  • Are there any health considerations I should know before travelling?

Inoculations may be required, and it is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. We recommend carrying a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes, and personal medical requirements. In remote areas, medical facilities may be distant, and our CEOs are prohibited from administering drugs. In Asia, pharmacies often stock Western drugs, but it's best to bring full drug names. Assess your ability to cope with our travel style based on physical and culture shock ratings. Travelers may be excluded if unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk.
  • Is travel insurance required for my trip?

Travel insurance is compulsory. You will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your CEO. Minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue is required. Personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage/personal effects are strongly recommended. If using credit card insurance, proof of purchase with a credit card in your name is required.
  • How much spending money do I need for my trip?

Spending money requirements vary by traveller for drinks, shopping, and tipping. Please consider your own spending habits when budgeting.
  • What should I know about currency, credit cards, and exchanging money while on this tour?

The local currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). Exchange rates fluctuate; refer to www.xe.com for daily rates. Many ATM machines accepting Visa and Mastercard are available in major cities. The use of USD cash is also recommended. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops but may incur a 2-4% transaction fee.
  • How much emergency money should I bring on this trip?

It is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency fund for unforeseen circumstances outside of our control, such as a natural disaster requiring a route change. This is a rare occurrence.
  • Should I be tipping on my trip?

Tipping service providers such as waiters (around 10%) is customary and expected in Asia, showing appreciation. Opportunities to tip local guides or drivers will arise; recommendations range from $4-5 USD per person per day. At the end of the trip, if you felt your CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated, with a guideline of $8-10 USD per person per day.
  • What activities are optional on this trip?

Optional activities include: In Delhi, a Half Day Culinary Tour. In Jaipur, a Movie at Raj Mandir (200-400 INR), City Palace Visit (1000 INR), Jantar Mantar Visit (202 INR), Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) (202 INR), Jaipur Balloon Ride, and Jaipur Cycle Tour (35 per person). In Orchha, a Puja Ceremony (Free) and an Orchha Cooking School. In Varanasi, a Heritage and Spiritual Walk in Old Benaras and a Guided Tour of Sarnath.
  • Who will be leading the group?

All group trips are accompanied by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO) who will manage your travels, provide information, suggest activities, and recommend local eateries. They have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited. Local guides are also utilized for more specific knowledge, offering the best of both worlds.
  • What do I need to know about safety and security on my trip?

It is recommended to check your government's travel advice before departure. Use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leave expensive jewelry at home. Many hotels have safety deposit boxes. A lock for luggage is recommended. Your CEO can amend the itinerary for safety concerns and will accompany included activities. For free time, use good judgment when selecting optional activities. Major cities can have risks at night; stay in small groups and use taxis. Avoid protests and demonstrations. Water-based activities carry inherent risks; participate only with a guide. Swimming is at your own risk. Visit www.gadventures.com/travel-resources/safety/ for more personal safety tips.
  • What rules should I know before joining this trip?

Illegal drugs are not tolerated and contravene local laws, risking the group. Smoking marijuana and opium is unacceptable for travellers. Exploitation of prostitutes is against our travel philosophy. CEOs have the right to expel any group member for drug possession or using prostitutes.
  • How should I dress to respect local customs during the tour?

In India, dress standards are conservative. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is recommended for the hot and humid climate. As a general guideline, shoulders and knees should be covered at all times, and shorts are not allowed as they may restrict entry to religious buildings and family homes. A light water and windproof jacket is useful, and a hat is essential. It can be very cold in the hills from December to February. Bringing photos or postcards of your home country can be a great way to initiate conversations with locals.
  • When can I do my laundry on this trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge. There may be times when you will need to do your own laundry, so bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap is suggested.
  • What is Planeterra?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization that turns travel into impact by connecting underserved local communities to tourism benefits. They develop and support community-owned businesses that empower Indigenous people, women, and youth, and protect the environment. As a major donor, we cover all Planeterra's operating costs, ensuring 100% of your donation directly supports their projects. You can donate $1/day to create opportunities for local people and protect the environment.
  • What should LGBTQ+ travellers know about safety and travel considerations on this trip?

The safety and well-being of all travellers, including those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, is a priority. We encourage you to visit our LGBTQ+ page for useful resources, including the Equaldex tool, to ensure you feel safe and comfortable throughout your trip.
  • What should I know about the local culture and potential challenges in India?

India offers a unique and different travel experience. While English is widely spoken and infrastructure is generally good, expect the unexpected. Initial culture shock from pollution, poverty, and crowds can be challenging but should be embraced as an adventure. Be prepared for different attitudes towards timekeeping, public cleanliness, privacy, and service. Trains may be late, plumbing temperamental, and power outages common. A lot of patience, a good sense of humour, and a willingness to interact with local people will greatly enhance your travel experience.
