Itinerary
Day 1
Reykjavik
Hallo! Welcome to Iceland. Your adventure begins in Reykjavik, which lies just below the Arctic Circle. The city sees around four hours of sunlight a day in winter and 22 hours or more in summer. You’ll have a welcome meeting at 5 pm at your accommodation tonight. If you arrive early, perhaps join locals in the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool or head to the National Museum and learn about the history of Iceland from the ninth century. Tonight, maybe head out for dinner and get to know your fellow travellers.
Day 2
Landmannalaugar
Travel through the beautiful Icelandic countryside to Fjallabak Nature Reserve. When you arrive, stop at Landmannalaugar for lunch before checking into your rustic mountain hut accommodation. After checking in, lace up your boots and set off on your first circular hike through the nearby valleys, geothermal features and lava fields. When you return, maybe soak in the geothermal hot creek near your accommodation before sitting down to a traditional Icelandic dinner of dishes like mountain lamb, fish and of course, lots of potatoes!
Day 3
Laugavegur Trail
Today, you’ll begin your first day on the Laugavegur Trail on a hike through multi-colored mountains and more lava fields. Depending on the weather, you might be able to see Mount Hekla and several icecaps as you walk. Your hike finishes at the obsidian dome where the Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut is located. When you arrive, enjoy some free time before heading out for dinner with your group.
Day 4
Laugavegur Trail
After breakfast, set off across the Hrafntinnusker plateau with wide open views of geothermal formations, hot springs and mud pools. As you reach the edge of this plateau, take in the open green plains and moss-covered hills. You’ll finish today’s hike at your simple trailside hut in the mountains at Hvanngil. When you arrive, maybe put your feet up before regrouping for dinner.
Day 5
Laugavegur Trail
This morning, you’ll hike away from the glaciers and moss mountains and across the desert of black sand. If the weather is nice this afternoon, there will be an optional hike along the Makarfljotsgljufur Canyon for panoramic views of the neighbouring icecaps. If time allows, maybe hike to the edge of the canyon before settling into the cosy Botnar huts in the valley of Emstrur.
Day 6
Laugavegur Trail to Reykjavik
Today, you’ll leave the Emstrur Valley with a steep descent and bridge crossing. As you walk, you’ll see the basaltic columns, green mossy gorges and large glaciers. Cross the Thronga Glacial River and listen to bird songs as you walk through native birch forest. Finish your hike in Thorsmörk then board the local bus back to Reykjavik. When you arrive, check into your hotel before having the rest of the evening free for you to explore. Tonight, maybe head out for dinner with your fellow travellers – a great way to celebrate the final night of your trip.
Day 7
Reykjavik
Today is the final day of our Iceland’s Laugavegur Trail hiking adventure. As there are no further activities, your trip comes to an end this morning. If you’d like to stay longer, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time.
