Itinerary
Day 1
London to York via Cambridge & Punting Experience
Welcome to the start of your exhilarating week-long journey through Great Britain! Today, we'll set off through the scenic English countryside, our first great adventure on this trip. Our journey takes us to Cambridge, where we'll enjoy a classic punting trip along the River Cam. As we glide along the water, take in the stunning views and historic landmarks that form the backdrop of this renowned university city.
Our next stop is the historical city of York. Known for its rich history and captivating architecture, York offers a treasure trove of stories waiting to be discovered. Join your tour leader for an introductory walking tour, and immerse yourself in the fascinating tales that bring this city to life.
We conclude the day with a sumptuous traditional British roast dinner at a local restaurant in York, a delightful way to round off your first day in Great Britain.
Day 2
York to Edinburgh via Hadrian’s Wall & Jedburgh
We depart from York and head to our first stop: the iconic Angel of the North statue. Next, we visit Hadrian's Wall, an extraordinary Roman fortification built in 122 AD under Emperor Hadrian, representing the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
A short drive takes us to Jedburgh, a charming Scottish border town with deep historical and royal connections. Here, you'll have time to explore its impressive architecture and wander its picturesque streets.
Our journey continues through Scotland as we make our way to Edinburgh. After checking into our hotel, we'll visit a nearby distillery for a whisky tasting, a quintessential Scottish experience. We conclude the day with a group dinner in Edinburgh.
Day 3
Free Day in Edinburgh (Optional Castle & City Tours)
Today, the choice is yours to explore Edinburgh at leisure. Known as Scotland’s cultural hub, the city offers stunning architecture, art galleries, and memorials. Wander along the Royal Mile to soak up its historic charm.
For those interested in venturing further, consider the optional Sights of Stirling excursion. Alternatively, join the Conquer the Capital tour with your leader, which features visits to Edinburgh Castle and other key landmarks along the Royal Mile.
In the evening, there's the option to attend a traditional Scottish dinner, where you'll savour local cuisine and enjoy storytelling.
Day 4
Scottish Highlands Tour – Loch Ness, Glencoe & Culloden
Today, we immerse ourselves in the enchanting Scottish Highlands. Our journey begins at Culloden Battlefield, a site steeped in history from the Jacobite uprising. Next, we travel to the legendary Loch Ness, famous for tales of the elusive Loch Ness Monster. You may opt for a one-hour cruise here and, if you're lucky, catch a glimpse of 'Nessie'.
As we continue, we’ll see Ben Nevis, the tallest peak in Britain, a stunning natural landmark. Our route then leads us through the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe, a valley known for its striking beauty and turbulent past. We conclude the day by settling into our hotel in the heart of the Highlands.
Day 5
Highlands to Liverpool via Loch Lomond & Lake District
Today, we travel towards Liverpool, renowned as the birthplace of The Beatles and home to legendary football clubs. Our journey takes us through the stunning landscapes of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. We'll stop in the charming town of Gretna Green, famous as a romantic elopement destination on the Scottish border.
Continuing south, we'll pause in the picturesque Lake District, known for its poetic inspiration and breathtaking scenery. In the late afternoon, we will enjoy a guided driving tour of Liverpool, showcasing the city's vibrant culture and rich history before heading to our hotel.
You have the evening free to explore at leisure. Beatles fans will delight in visiting spots tied to iconic songs such as 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Penny Lane'. To complete the day, consider an evening at the Cavern Club, the historic venue where The Beatles played many early gigs. Liverpool also offers a variety of excellent dining options in its numerous restaurants and pubs.
Day 6
Liverpool Beatles Tour, Stratford-upon-Avon & Cardiff
This morning, we'll explore iconic Beatles landmarks in Liverpool. Afterwards, we'll head to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. You'll have some free time here to explore; perhaps you'll choose to delve deeper into Shakespeare's world by joining an optional visit to his childhood home, which includes a traditional British afternoon tea at the Shakespeare Royal Theatre.
Our journey then takes us to southern Wales, where we'll pause to admire a medieval Welsh castle. Finally, we arrive in Cardiff, where we'll enjoy a guided driving tour of the vibrant Welsh capital. Dinner will be served at our hotel before we settle in for the night.
Day 7
Bath, Stonehenge & Return to London
On our final day, we immerse ourselves in must-see destinations. We begin with a visit to the historic town of Bath, renowned for its stunning Georgian architecture and Roman roots. Our orientation tour will guide us through its rich history and notable landmarks.
Afterwards, enjoy some free time to explore Bath at your own pace, or you could choose to join an optional tour of the Roman Baths, a fascinating glimpse into ancient spa culture.
Next, we travel to the mysterious Stonehenge. You have the opportunity to participate in an optional excursion for a closer look at this prehistoric wonder, whose purpose continues to intrigue archaeologists and visitors alike.
As our journey concludes, we board the Expat Explore coach one last time, the perfect moment to exchange contact details and share memories with your fellow travellers. Our tour ends in London, where you can reflect on the shared experiences and friendships formed.
