Highlights

  • Horta Marina: A world-renowned harbour where transatlantic sailors have, for decades, painted murals, logos, blessings, and stories on every wall, floor, and dock. These colorful artworks form a living tapestry of ocean adventures found nowhere else in the archipelago.
  • Capelinhos Volcano: The most iconic volcanic site in the Azores, offering the rare chance to walk on a lunar landscape created during the 1957 eruption. The area feels untouched, raw, almost otherworldly - an unforgettable encounter with the power of the earth.

Summary

Starting and finishing in Horta, this three day Azores taster blends easy exploring with big Atlantic drama. You will wander the storied marina, where colourful murals tell of ocean crossings, and rise to Monte da Guia for sweeping views across Porto Pim and Pico’s striking silhouette. Learn the island’s sea lore at the Whaling Station Museum, then head west to Capelinhos – a haunting volcanic moonscape – and its brilliant underground Interpretation Centre. Lunch showcases ultra fresh seafood in a local restaurant. Cap the day at the lush Caldeira, where rimside paths reveal vast vistas. Expect hydrangea lined lanes, quiet villages and soothing hotel downtime.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Horta

We greet you on arrival on Faial and transfer you from the airport or port to your hotel. Its design blends volcanic stone, maritime colours and broad panoramic windows that open to the Atlantic, with views that often frame the striking silhouette of Pico Mountain across the water – a constant reminder of the archipelago’s volcanic origins. The atmosphere is calm and refined, an ideal base for the days of exploration ahead. Overnight in Horta.

  • Day 2

    Horta

This exclusive day reveals Faial’s many faces, weaving culture, geology, history and grand scenery into one of a kind exploration. We begin at an easy pace in Horta, strolling the legendary marina where vibrant murals by passing sailors create a sense of global community and adventure. We then ascend to Monte da Guia for sweeping views over the bay, Porto Pim beach and the surrounding nature reserve – a serene pause of sea breeze and layered blues before the island’s wilder side.

You may choose to visit the Whaling Station Museum nearby to delve into the island’s ocean heritage, set within a beautifully restored building that traces the passage from whaling to modern marine conservation. By midday we head west to Capelinhos, scene of the 1957 eruption that enlarged the island. The first sight is striking – ash, cinder and sculpted ridges stretching towards the Atlantic. We enjoy a guided visit to the Capelinhos Interpretation Centre, ingeniously built below ground, bringing the eruption’s timeline and human stories to life. Stepping outside amid silence and mineral tones, it is compelling to stand on geologically young ground. Lunch is in a local restaurant where the flavours of the sea take centre stage – fresh fish, tender seafood and traditional dishes that showcase the island’s culinary heritage. In the afternoon we climb towards the great Caldeira, the central volcanic crater clad in green. Weather permitting, we take a short walk near the rim for sweeping views across the interior and coastline. The return winds through Faial’s lush heart – paths lined with hydrangeas, rolling pastures, hidden cones and quiet rural scenes that reveal the island’s gentler side. Overnight in Horta.

  • Day 3

    Horta

On your final day we provide a private transfer to the airport or port for your onward journey.
