Frequently asked questions

  • What kind of accommodation is provided on this tour?

Accommodation will primarily be in multi-share hostels (typically 6-8 people per room), with a choice of mixed-gender and female-only dorms, and available upgrades to twin-share rooms. The tour also includes stays in simple hotels/guesthouses/bungalows, simple beach bungalows, and three nights on overnight trains.
  • Are there any exceptions to the standard rooming arrangements, especially for solo travelers?

Yes, on overnight trains (Nights 3, 9 & 12), compartments have 2 upper and 2 lower berths with no gender separation, and twin-share options are not available. Solo travelers on group trips are generally paired in shared accommodation with someone of the same sex.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the tour?

The tour utilizes a variety of transportation methods including private vehicles, overnight trains, cycling, open-top jeeps, motorbikes, boats, ferries, cyclos, tuk-tuks, and walking.
  • What meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 22 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 6 dinners. Generally, other meals are not included, providing flexibility for you to choose where and what to eat.
  • Who will be leading the tour group?

All group trips are accompanied by a Chief Experience Officer (CEO). The CEO will provide information, offer suggestions for activities, recommend local eating spots, and introduce local contacts. Local guides are also used for specific knowledge at various sites.
  • What is the maximum group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 24 travelers.
  • What currencies are used, and what are the recommendations for carrying money?

The local currencies you will use are Vietnamese Dong, US Dollar, Cambodian Riel, and Thai Baht. It is recommended to carry money via debit cards for ATM withdrawals (Visa and Mastercard networks are widely accepted) and some USD cash for emergency situations. Ensure USD notes are new and in good condition (post-2003).
  • What is the recommended emergency fund for this trip?

It is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund for unforeseen circumstances outside of our control.
  • Is tipping customary in Southeast Asia, and what are the guidelines?

Yes, tipping service providers like waiters (approximately 10%) is customary in Asia. For local guides and drivers, recommendations range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day. Tipping your CEO at the end of the trip is also appreciated, with a guideline of $20-25 USD per person per week.
  • Are there any health considerations or required inoculations for this trip?

Inoculations may be required for the countries visited, and it is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. We recommend carrying a First Aid kit and personal medical requirements, as medical facilities can be remote in some areas.
  • What are the safety and security considerations for this tour?

We strongly recommend using a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leaving expensive jewelry at home. Petty theft, especially bag snatching by motorbikes, can occur in some Vietnamese towns and cities, so always keep bags secure and carry only necessary cash. Your CEO has the authority to amend the itinerary if deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
  • Are there any specific rules regarding illegal drugs or sex tourism?

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips, as possession or use contravenes local laws and puts the group at risk. The exploitation of people in the sex trade is completely contrary to our philosophy of respect. CEOs have the right to expel any group member found violating these rules.
  • What are the local dress code recommendations for the tour?

In Asia, dress standards are more conservative. We recommend packing loose, lightweight, long clothing suitable for hot and humid climates. When visiting temples, mosques, or other holy sites in Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim countries, please dress respectfully, avoiding very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tank tops.
  • What optional activities are available during the tour?

There are many optional activities throughout the tour, including biking, temple hopping, hiking to Hang Mua Peak, exploring Trang An Grottoes in Ninh Binh, caving in Phong Nha, motorbike tours in Hue, cooking classes and lantern making in Hoi An, snorkeling in Nha Trang, visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels, exploring pepper farms and taking sunset cruises in Kampot, and guided tours of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap.
  • What is the Planeterra Foundation and its role in the tour?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to turning travel into impact by helping local communities earn income from tourism. They develop and support community-owned businesses and integrate their projects into our itineraries. Our company is Planeterra’s largest corporate donor, covering all operating costs, so 100% of your donation will directly benefit people in need.
  • Are laundry facilities available during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some of our hotels for a charge. We suggest bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap as there will be times you may want to do your own laundry.
  • What are the visa and entry requirements for Vietnam and Cambodia?

All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. Visas for Vietnam must be arranged ahead of time (minimum 2 weeks processing) as they are not available upon arrival. For Cambodia, visas can be obtained in advance or upon arrival at airports or land borders for approximately $30 USD. Please have at least two passport photos. An e-Arrival form for Cambodia should be completed online before arrival if entering by air.
  • Is travel insurance compulsory for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory to participate in any of our trips. A minimum coverage of USD200,000 for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation, is required.
