Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Athens
On arrival at Athens Airport, we are met by our local representative and transferred to our hotel in Athens. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax after the journey or begin exploring the city independently.
Day 2
Classical Athens City Tour
This morning, we enjoy a panoramic city tour introducing us to Athens’ most significant landmarks. We pass the Panathinaikon Stadium, site of the first modern Olympic Games, the Zappeion, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch. Our drive continues through Syntagma Square, with views of the Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, before passing Schliemann’s House, the Academy, the University, the National Library and the Old Parliament.
We then visit the Acropolis, exploring the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. Our experience continues at the Acropolis Museum, home to remarkable finds from the sacred hill, including the original Caryatides. The afternoon is at leisure - you may wish to wander through Plaka and the historic centre at your own pace.
Itinerary alterations - please note: Depending on the arrival day and dates of travel, the order of excursions may be different.
Day 3
Delphi Excursion
Athens - Delphi - Athens. We depart this morning for a full-day excursion to Delphi. Set on the slopes of Mount Parnassos with views over ancient olive groves and the Corinthian Gulf, Delphi was considered the most sacred place in the ancient Greek world. We explore the Sanctuary of Apollo, walk along the Sacred Way and see the Temple of Apollo, once home to the oracle Pythia. In the afternoon, we return to Athens.
Day 4
Peloponnese Highlights
Athens - Corinth - Mycenae - Nafplio - Athens. Today we travel into the Peloponnese on a full-day tour. Our first stop is the Corinth Canal, an impressive engineering feat linking the Aegean and Ionian seas. We continue to Mycenae, described by Homer as ‘rich in gold’, where we see the Cyclopean walls, the Lion’s Gate and the Tomb of Agamemnon.
We then visit the elegant town of Nafplio, once Greece’s first capital, dominated by the Venetian fortress of Palamidi. On a walking tour, we explore the old town’s narrow cobbled streets, neo-classical buildings and seafront promenade, with views towards the fortified islet of Bourtzi, before returning to Athens.
