Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Auckland to Omapere

Kauri forests, lakes & the Far North.

We leave Auckland behind and head north, stopping along the way to ease into the adventure.

On the way, we'll stop at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, where you’ll learn the story of New Zealand’s mighty kauri trees and early pioneers.

After a lunch stop in Dargaville, we cool off with a visit to the stunning Kai Iwi Lakes - crystal-clear freshwater surrounded by native forest. Later, we venture into the legendary Waipoua Forest, home to Tāne Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand. Depending on timing, your Waipoua experience takes place either today or tomorrow.

We finish the day on the west coast in Omapere, checking into our beachfront accommodation. Tonight, enjoy a relaxed fish & chips dinner (included) as the sun sets over the Tasman Sea.

  • Day 2

    Omapere to Paihia

West Coast to Bay of Islands

This morning is all about flexibility. If we didn’t visit Waipoua yesterday, you’ll explore the forest today - either en route or via a complimentary local shuttle.

We’ll then cross the Far North toward the east coast, stopping at a winery after lunch for a relaxed wine tasting before arriving in Paihia later in the afternoon. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day and evening are completely free.

Take time to unwind by the waterfront, choose from a range of optional activities, or simply explore this vibrant Bay of Islands town at your own pace.

  • Day 3

    Bay of Islands

Free Day in the Bay of Islands

    Today is yours to design.

Spend the day exactly how you like - cruise the Bay of Islands, go dolphin spotting, kayak to secluded beaches, visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, or simply enjoy a relaxed day by the water with great food and ocean views.

Your included Waitangi Treaty Grounds combo pass allows you to explore the grounds at your own pace. Your guide will be on hand throughout the day to help arrange optional activities or share local tips.

In the evening, you’ll come together for an included Hāngī dinner at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds - a traditional Māori feast and cultural experience.

  • Day 4

    Paihia to Auckland

We journey south today with a few unforgettable stops along the way.

Our first highlight is a stop in the charming Matakana Village. Enjoy some free time to relax over lunch, browse the boutique shops and local galleries, or sample the region’s renowned wines at The Vintry, which offers tastings from a selection of local vineyards. It’s the perfect laid-back way to wrap up your Northland adventure before returning to Auckland in the late afternoon for your flight to Christchurch.

  • Day 5

    Christchurch to Punakaiki

Today, you embark on the world-renowned TranzAlpine train journey, one of the most scenic train rides in the world. As the train winds through the Southern Alps, you’ll pass snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and river valleys. Arriving in Greymouth, your tour guide and vehicle will be waiting for you. From here, we head to stunning Punakaiki, home of the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes.

To round off the day, the group will gather for an included dinner, a relaxed way to share stories, connect with fellow travellers, and celebrate the start of your South Island adventure.

  • Day 6

    Punakaiki

Today is yours to explore the coastal wonders of Punakaiki. Discover the spectacular Pancake Rocks, where columns of water shoot skyward through natural rock formations. Wander through coastal rainforests, explore limestone cliffs, caves, and pristine beaches, or take a leisurely walk along the rugged coastline. If you're after a more active adventure, kayak through a valley of monumental limestone cliffs in Paparoa National Park. The beauty of this area offers a truly memorable experience.

  • Day 7

    Punakaiki to Abel Tasman

Travel along the wild West Coast, stopping to take in scenic views, seal colonies, and lighthouse vistas. As we head inland through the picturesque Nelson Lakes, we make our way towards Abel Tasman National Park, considered one of New Zealand's most beautiful destinations. Arrive in the quaint Abel Tasman region and enjoy the afternoon at your leisure, exploring the charming local town or relaxing at your premium accommodation.

  • Day 8

    Abel Tasman

Spend a full day discovering the wonders of Abel Tasman National Park. Choose from a variety of experiences to suit your interests, such as kayaking along the golden shores, hiking the coastal track, or even trying more exhilarating activities like canyoning or skydiving. Alternatively, relax with a peaceful walk along the beach and enjoy the stunning scenery, which offers one of the best beach experiences in New Zealand. Keep an eye out for native wildlife like the Tui and Tuatara.

  • Day 9

    Abel Tasman to Malborough

Leaving Abel Tasman behind, we drive through the picturesque Marlborough region, famous for its vineyards and world-class Sauvignon Blanc. Enjoy a stop at one of the local wineries for lunch and a tasting to savour the region’s finest wines and take in the stunning views over the vineyards.

  • Day 10

    Malborough to Kaikoura

After a nourishing breakfast, we continue on to Kaikōura, a small coastal town renowned for its dramatic coastal scenery and exceptional wildlife encounters. The afternoon is yours to enjoy - whether you choose to spot seals along the shoreline, embark on a whale-watching tour, or swim with dolphins, you’ll have the opportunity to experience some of the world’s most remarkable marine life at your own pace.

  • Day 11

    Kaikoura to Christchurch

This morning, take some time to soak in the stunning views of the Kaikōura mountains and enjoy a final relaxed start to the day. In the late morning, we begin our journey back to Christchurch, stopping at a local winery along the way to enjoy some refreshments. Your guide will then continue on to Christchurch, arriving at approximately 4:00 pm.

Customer reviews & ratings

  • I had a wonderful experience with Wild Kiwi. Both of my guides were very organized and knowledgable about the areas we were visiting and the culture. The tour was very immersive, active, and fun. There was a great mix of activities and lot of adrenaline! Highly recommend Wild Kiwi to anyone wanting to explore New Zealand! Shoutout our guides Tom and Clauds too :)

  • What an absolutely AMAZING trip! Firstly the tour guides Ben and Tom were incredible. I’ve done tours before and by far these guys are the best. They knew NZ inside out, had facts to share throughout the journey, were highly personable, great fun and highly responsible at the same time. The group size was great for getting to know everyone. I really enjoyed the stop back in Christchurch as we all went out for dinner and watched the rugby. The tour pace was great, lots of opportunities for activities and photos. Hostels were also to a high standard with hot tubs in some of them. I have made some true friends on this trip and cannot recommend the company more highly.
