Frequently asked questions

  • How challenging is the Mt Toubkal climb and what fitness level is required?

The ascent up Mt Toubkal is a challenging and thrilling high-altitude adventure (Physical Rating 4). It is accessible to anyone in good shape and hungry for a high-altitude experience. This trip travels to altitudes over 8,000ft (2,440m), and while most people adapt with minimal effects, everyone reacts differently. Our itinerary includes a slow ascent to aid acclimatization.
  • What type of accommodation can I expect on this tour?

The tour includes 2 nights in hotels, 2 nights in traditional mountain gîtes, and 2 nights camping in 2-man tents. Mountain gîtes are simple, multi-share accommodations in family homes or huts with basic, shared bathroom facilities and often no hot water. Camping provides modern two-person tents with foam mattresses. Guests are required to bring their own sleeping bag, sleeping sheet, and bath towel for gîtes, and a sleeping bag (3-4 season recommended), and optionally a lightweight self-inflating mattress and inflatable pillow for camping.
  • What meals are included during the tour?

The tour includes 6 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners. Meals consist of simple, healthy, seasonal Moroccan food. Breakfast typically includes bread, jam, cheese, and sometimes eggs with tea/coffee. Lunches are usually salads with eggs or tinned fish and bread. Dinners often start with soup, followed by tagine, rice, or pasta dishes, also with plenty of bread. We can cater to vegetarians, and any other dietary restrictions should be advised at the time of booking.
  • Will I have the opportunity to interact with local communities and learn about their customs?

Yes, traditional Amazigh communities are located along the trekking route. You will have ample opportunities to learn about their customs through village visits and overnight stays, where you'll enjoy hearty home-cooked meals. Our local CEO (Chief Experience Officer) will also provide insights into the local culture, history, and social aspects.
  • Who will be leading the tour, and what support is provided during the trek?

The tour is led by a certified mountain guide who serves as your Chief Experience Officer (CEO). During the trek, mules and muleteers will carry your larger bags (up to 12kg/26 lbs per person in soft duffle bags or frameless backpacks) and all equipment. A dedicated cook will accompany the group to prepare meals.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory for all participants. It must provide a minimum of USD200,000 coverage for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation. It is strongly recommended that the policy also covers personal liability, trip cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects. Some adventure activities may require extra coverage.
  • How does accommodation work for solo travelers?

We do not charge a single supplement on our group trips. Solo travelers will be paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with another traveler of the same sex for the duration of the trip.
  • What currency should I use, and how should I manage my money during the trip?

The local currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are common, but it's advisable to carry a combination of cash (Euros, GBP, or USD are commonly exchanged) and credit/debit cards (Visa is widely accepted, though fees may apply). An emergency fund of at least USD $200 (or equivalent) is recommended for unforeseen circumstances.
  • What is the tipping custom in Morocco, and how is it managed on this tour?

Tipping is customary in Morocco. For convenience and to avoid awkward situations, your CEO will manage a 'tipping kitty' collected from the group to tip collective service providers like restaurant staff and drivers. A separate tip for your CEO is also appreciated at the end of the trip, with a general guideline of $8-11 USD per person per day.
  • Are there any optional activities available during the tour?

Yes, in Marrakech, you can enjoy optional activities such as visiting El Badi Palace, exploring Djemaa el Fna Market Square, Dar Si Said, Jardins Majorelle, Musée de Marrakech, or taking a Hot Air Balloon excursion.
  • What should I know about the weather conditions, especially if traveling in winter?

Morocco's climate can vary from very hot during summer days (up to 50°C) to cold at night in the mountains during autumn, early spring, and winter (down to -6°C), with a high probability of snowfall. If traveling between November and February, expect cooler to cold temperatures and plan to pack warmer clothing, as most Moroccan buildings are not equipped with heating.
  • How do local holidays like Ramadan or Aid Al-Adha affect the tour?

During Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims, there may be some limitations to services and disruptions to schedules, but tours generally operate effectively. It's important to show increased cultural sensitivity by wearing modest clothing and avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public. During Aid Al-Adha, many shops and restaurants may be closed, some historical sites might be inaccessible, and hotel staffing may be reduced.
  • Is tap water safe to drink in Morocco?

It is advisable to drink bottled water in Morocco.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 12 travelers, with an average group size of 10.
  • What specific safety considerations are there regarding altitude?

This trip involves high altitudes (over 8,000ft/2,440m), where you may experience the effects of altitude as your body acclimatizes, and there is a small risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It's crucial to ascend slowly, and if you experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, or breathing difficulties, you should immediately inform your CEO and follow their advice.
  • Are there any required vaccinations or health precautions for this trip?

Inoculations may be required for Morocco, and it is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. Protection against typhoid, tetanus, infectious hepatitis, and polio is generally recommended. Please note that tour leaders are prohibited from administering any type of drug.
  • Are laundry facilities available during the trip?

Some hotels offer laundry facilities for a charge. There may be times when you need to do your own laundry, so bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap is suggested.
  • What are the general safety and security recommendations for this trip?

We recommend using a neck wallet or money belt for valuables, leaving valuable jewelry at home, and securing your luggage with a lock. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. Your CEO has the authority to adjust the itinerary for safety reasons and will accompany all included activities. During free time, exercise good judgment, travel in small groups, and consider taxis for night excursions. Avoid areas with protests or demonstrations.
