Itinerary

  • Day 1

Arrival and Trek to Machame Camp - 11k - 4-5 hrs

After breakfast, we drive to Machame Gate (1-hour journey), passing through the village of Machame at the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. Once at the gate, we complete the necessary registration and begin our trek through the lush rainforest. The path meanders up a ridge, leading us to Machame Camp (2,833m), where we’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night.

  • Day 2

    Machame Camp to Shira Camp - 5.3km - 4-5hrs

Machame Camp (3000) to Shira Camp (3840), distance is about 9 kms. Breakfast is served early in the mess tent and, weather permitting; you could take in your first view of the Western Breach of Kilimanjaro. The lunch stop will be reached at about 3600m and after this short lunch and an equally limited rest you'll continue up the rocky ridge to the next camp on the mountain, Shira camp (3840).

  • Day 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp - 10.75km - 5-6hrs

After breakfast, continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower camp (15,190ft/4,785m), a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. After lunch, we descended to Barranco Camp (3953m/13,000ft) through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Beginning and end of the day at the same elevation is not a problem.

The time spent at higher altitude (Lava Tower) is very beneficial for acclimatization.

  • Day 4

    Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp - 6km - 4-5hrs

Barranco Camp (3950m) to Karanga Camp (4200m), distance is about 6 kms. The morning starts with a scramble up the almost vertical Barranco Wall to an altitude of about 4200m and after approx. 3 hours, the path now crosses through the southern slopes to reach the Karanga Valley.

  • Day 5

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp - 4km - 3-4hrs

Karanga Camp (4200m) to Barafu Camp (4600m), distance is about 7 kms. After breakfast, you continue in a southeasterly direction to the junction before turning north to reach Barafu camp (4600m) after about 4 hours. Here you take a long rest and prepare for the midnight ascent to the summit.

  • Day 6

Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp: 4.86km Up

We begin our summit attempt at midnight, trekking in the cold and dark hours toward Stella Point (5,730m). As the sun rises, we continue on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After taking in the panoramic views and snapping some photos, we descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for the night.

  • Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi - 9.1km - 3-4hrs

After breakfast and a celebration with your team, we descend through the rainforest towards Mweka Gate (1,633m). The terrain is wet, muddy, and steep, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Upon arrival at the gate, we’ll receive our summit certificates before driving back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and reflection on our incredible achievement.

  • Hello everyone! It was the coolest experience in my life. Everything was organized to the millimeter. We have received a lot of information before the trip. When we came to Tanzania it was exactly as they have explained to us. We have to make changes and return earlier than expected. The company reacted quickly and without any problem helped us in everything. We have had the best guides in the world. Swalehe & Muntary were always by our side. Supporting us and giving us encouragement. Everything on this trip was perfect. We felt very safe.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which airport do I fly into?

You'll need to fly into Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, the former tends to be cheaper. We can help arrange and book flights, just contact our team.
  • Where should I stay before the trek?

We recommend you stay in the Salinero Hotel in Moshi, or very close by as the pre trip briefing and pick up on day 1 will be there. Airport transfers and pre and post trip nights here can be booked through us, just ask our team
  • What's Included?

  • What should I pack?

A full packing list is included in the brochure which is free to download (there are buttons on this page, above the availability section:)
  • How many people are in the groups?

The group sizes are 1 to 20 people with most averaging between 5 and 10 people. Please check with our team for any specific departure date and we can provide more detail.
  • Will I be affected by the altitude?

Everyone feels the affects of lower oxygen levels but the majority of people just have to take it slowly and have minor symptoms. To keep the impact to a minimum we recommend arriving a couple of days before your climb, taking it slowly on the way up no matter how fit you are, keeping hydrated and avoiding alcohol until your celebrations back in Moshi!
  • How high is the climb?

The summit of mount Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters.
  • When is the best time to climb?

Being near the equator the seasons are not extreme but clear skies, dry weather and how busy the route will all have an impact on your trip. January, February then July to October offer the best weather for climbing, but as a result also the most other people on the mountain! March, June and November are often a happy medium between low numbers and reasonable weather - it depends on your own preference.
  • Do I require any vaccinations?

Please consult with your GP or local travel clinic to check what they recommend for you specifically - Tanzania does require Yellow Fever vaccines for some arrivals. Many destinations currently require a full course of COVID vaccines, as this is updated regularly please check with your own foreign offices website.
  • Do I need a visa?

Most visitors from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Europe and NZ will require a tourist visa. Please check with your local government office.
  • Is there mobile signal?

There is intermittent signal on Kilimanjaro but this is often affected by weather and should not be relied upon. It is most common to get signal about once a day, and your guides will be able to advise you on where this is most likely.
  • Can you cater to my diet?

The vast majority of dietary requirements can be catered for but please let our team know in advance.
  • Can I have a shower on Kili?

It is possible to upgrade to have a hot shower tent -ask our team for current prices.
  • What about the toilets?

Don't worry, everyone was wondering! There are "long drop" public toilets at every campsite. Essentially, they are wooden structures built around a deep hole dug into the ground. There are no commodes in the public toilets. You can upgrade to include a toilet tent if you would prefer:) Private toilets consist of a plastic toilet and a privacy tent. Just ask our team for current prices
  • Why choose the Machame route?

Machame is one of our favourite routes, and also has one of the highest success rates as it approaches the peak slower, and allows the ascents and descents that allow the best acclimatisation. It doesn't take the same route back down after Barafu and is one of the best for its range of scenery.
