• Is the Classic Inca Trail a physically demanding trek?

  Yes, the Inca Trail is considered a moderately hard trek, covering 43km (26 miles) at high altitude with significant ascents and descents. Previous trekking experience is not required, but good cardio and stamina are essential, and we recommend a few months of training, including long walks with elevation changes.

• What should I know about altitude sickness?

  Cusco is at 3300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level, so altitude sickness is possible. We advise arriving at least two days prior to acclimatize. Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes are lower, around 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). Tips include deep breathing, rest, plenty of water, avoiding alcohol/drugs, and consuming coca/muña tea. Consult your GP about medication like Diamox before departure.

• What kind of accommodation is provided during the trek?

  You will be camping for 3 nights in 4-man Eureka tents, provided for every two trekkers. Tents will be set up for you upon arrival at each campsite and include pillows and foam air mats.

• Can campsite locations change during the trek?

  Yes, in rare cases during periods of heavy rain (especially December to March) or after high rainfall, the terrain at the third campsite (Wiñay Wayna) can become unstable. If deemed safer by your guide, the third night may be spent at the Aguas Calientes campsite instead.

• Is drinking water provided during the trek?

  Yes, safe drinking water (boiled, filtered, and cooled) will be provided from your first lunch to your final breakfast. Please bring your own water bottles or a CamelBak and plan to carry at least 2 liters.

• What is Peru's policy on illicit drugs?

  Peru has extremely strict drug policies. Possession and trafficking of illicit drugs can lead to arrest and heavy fines for foreigners. It is strongly recommended to avoid any situations that could put your trip at risk.

• What kind of emergency support is available on the trek?

  All the guides have received training in First Aid and High Mountain rescue. A medical kit and satellite phone are kept with the team at all times. In the extremely rare case of a serious medical emergency, you will be evacuated to the nearest medical center.

• Is the Inca Trail permit included in the tour cost, and when should I book?

  Yes, your Inca Trail permit is included in the trip cost. Due to government limits (500 people/day on the Inca Trail, 2500 people/day at Machu Picchu) and high demand, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible. Passport details are required to confirm your space and book your permit.

• How will my luggage be handled during the trek?

  The tour operator will provide a personal porter for your belongings (up to a maximum of 7 kg/15lb in weight). You will receive a duffel bag at the briefing (on the night prior to your trek) for these items, including your sleeping bag and air mattress. You only need to carry a small, light daypack for personal essentials.

• Where can I store my luggage that I don't need on the trek?

  You won’t need to worry about luggage storage during the trek. If your hotel cannot hold your bags, your tour operator will securely store them and return them to you at your hotel at the end of your journey.

• What is the recommended tipping amount for the trekking team?

  Tipping is optional and at your discretion, but it is customary. As a rough idea, most operators suggest (from the group as a whole) between 60 and 80 soles per porter, 120 to 150 soles for each cook, and 160 to 200 soles for the guide.

• Is travel insurance compulsory for this trip?

  Yes, travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate. It must cover at a minimum medical expenses including emergency evacuation and repatriation. We strongly recommend policies also covering personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage/personal effects.

• What is included in the tour package?

  The tour includes 3 nights of camping in 4-man Eureka tents (for 2 trekkers), private transfer to the trailhead, a panoramic Vistadome train back to Cusco, knowledgeable guides and porters, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners (with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other options available), and entrance tickets to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.

• When is the best time to do the Inca Trail, and is it ever closed?

  Cusco has a rainy season (November to March) and a dry season (April to October). We advise all visitors to prepare for all types of weather by carrying layers, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and good rain gear. The Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance.

• Is Wi-Fi available during the trek?

  Wi-Fi will not be available during the trek. You may purchase a SIM card in Cusco if you wish. The tour operator carries a satellite phone during the trek in case of emergencies.

• Are there any age restrictions for participating in this tour?

  The minimum age for participants is 3 years old, and the maximum age is 99 years old.

• What are the minimum and maximum group sizes for this trek?

  The tour operates with a minimum group size of 1 participant and a maximum of 16 participants.
