Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Arrive in Mexico!

Landing in Cancun, we’ll meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in Playa del Carmen. You’ll have plenty of time to recover from your flight before meeting up with everyone in the group and getting excited for what’s to come.

  • Day 2

    Chichén Itzá & Cenotes

Today, we’re off to check out one of the New 7 Wonders of the World - Chichén Itzá. With a local guide leading the way, we’ll uncover the cool myths and awesome sights of these ancient ruins, like the iconic Temple of Kukulkan (or ‘El Castillo’), the spooky Platform of the Skulls, and the huge Plaza of a Thousand Columns. Then, get ready to dive into the crystal-clear waters of a stunning cenote, a super cool natural swimming spot hidden in an underground world. *You'll likely join forces with our Viva Mexico group for a few days.

  • Day 3

    Tulum Ruins & Beaches

Heading out this morning, we're on our way to Tulum. We’ll have the choice between checking out the archaeological Tulum Ruins, or hitting the crystal-clear waters of Tulum beach. Back in Playa, it's time for dinner and drinks. Let's dig into some avocado, knock back a tequila shot (or two), and have a blast!

  • Day 4

    Boat Trip on the Lagoon

Hop on the bus as we embark on our adventure south along the Yucatán Peninsula to truly begin this epic trip. Our first destination, Bacalar, is renowned for its stunning, vibrant blue lagoon. Once we check in, we'll experience the lagoon in the best way possible—on a boat ride. As the boat glides across the lagoon, you'll have the chance to cool off in the crystal-clear waters and maybe even raise a beer in celebration.

  • Day 5

    Welcome to Belize!

Today, we continue our journey south as we cross the border into the next country on our trip—Belize! Home to the world’s second-largest barrier reef and rich in vibrant Caribbean culture, Belize is our gateway to island life. We'll take a short ferry ride to Caye Caulker, where our hotel is just a minute from the beach. Drop off your bags and head straight to the white sandy shores. Later, we'll gather for a sunset on the opposite side of the island, where local stingrays swim right between your legs.

  • Day 6

Hol Chan Marine Reserve Snorkelling Trip

Get your snorkels ready as we hop on a boat bound for the breathtaking Hol Chan Marine Reserve, home to an incredible variety of marine life. We'll make stops along the barrier reef, offering plenty of opportunities to spot colourful fish and vibrant corals. Our final stop brings the chance to encounter the gentle "sea cows," better known as manatees (seasonal). For dinner, we’ll indulge in some irresistible Caribbean cuisine. Imagine the freshest fish you’ve ever tasted, topped with a mouthwatering Caribbean curry sauce. Alright, now I’m getting hungry!

  • Day 7

    Caye Caulker Beach Day

Today is all about well-deserved free time. Maybe you’ll head straight to the beach to soak up the sun and unwind, or maybe you’ll visit the island’s famous Split, where the drinks flow and the music plays all day long! It’s pure island vibes here—dipping in and out of the crystal-clear blue water to cool off, with a cocktail in hand. If lounging in the sun isn’t your thing, there are plenty of activities to choose from, like paddleboarding or snorkelling.

  • Day 8

    Arrive in Guatemala!

Country number 3 awaits us as we say farewell to island paradise. As we journey across Belize, we’ll stop for lunch in a local Mayan village, offering a glimpse into the diverse cultures of this fascinating, small country. Together, we'll prepare a traditional Mayan lunch while learning about their history and way of life. With full bellies, we’ll cross the border into Guatemala and check into our hotel on the charming island of Flores.

  • Day 9

    Explore Ancient Tikal

Get ready to channel your inner Indiana Jones as we travel thousands of years back in time. Hidden deep within the northern jungles of Guatemala, this massive archaeological site is one of the largest remnants of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. With highlights like the towering Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the iconic Temple of the Grand Jaguar, you'll truly feel like you're walking in the footsteps of an ancient, mysterious civilization. Our expert local guide will lead us through the complex, bringing the history of this fascinating world to life.

  • Day 10

    Candelaria Caves & Guatemala Highlands

Guatemala is a large country, so we have quite a bit of ground to cover today as we head south toward the Guatemalan Highlands. But don't worry—we’ll break up the trip with a visit to the Candelaria Caves. This cave system stretches approximately 80 km and holds great significance in Mayan culture, as it is believed to be the gateway to the underworld. After exploring the depths and telling the devil, "Not today, sir!" we’ll emerge back into the world and continue our journey toward Cobán, located at the edge of the highlands.

  • Day 11

Semuc Champey, Tubing & Local Lunch

This morning, a fleet of 4X4s will whisk us away on a genuine adventure into the highlands. Hold on tight as we navigate the winding mountain roads, offering breathtaking views on both sides. As we journey through these rugged landscapes, we’re on the lookout for something truly special. But the adventure doesn’t end there—we’ll need to hike the final stretch into the jungle. There, we’ll discover a stunning bright blue river flowing through the mountains, cascading down the valley and creating a series of beautiful pools edged with vibrant, light green algae. We’ll have a couple hours to float in these refreshing pools, basking in the sun and leisurely drifting down the river in rubber rings. We’ll then arrive at an authentic Mayan home for a traditional, mouthwatering lunch! Can you imagine a better way to spend your afternoon?

  • Day 12

    Chichicastenango & Lake Atitlán

This morning, we continue our journey south through the highlands with a stop in the lively town of Chichicastenango. On market days, this place hosts one of the largest local markets in Central America. Next, we’ll head to Panajachel, our overnight destination, situated right next to the renowned Lake Atitlán. With the gentle lapping of the lake water on the shore and the stunning view of towering volcanoes encircling the lake, you’ll definitely want to take a moment to soak in the beauty of this remarkable spot.

  • Day 13

San Marcos & San Juan Homestay

For many locals around Lake Atitlán, the quickest way to commute and run errands between towns is by crossing the lake in local boats. So, naturally, we’ll follow their lead - the views from the water are even more breathtaking! Our first stop is the charming town of San Marcos, known for its laid-back, bohemian vibe and its tranquil nature reserve right by the water—perfect for a refreshing swim. Next, we’ll head to San Juan, where we’ll spend the night in a local homestay with local Mayan families. During a traditional dinner, we’ll have the opportunity to learn some Mayan phrases and, of course, practice a bit more of our Spanish.

  • Day 14

Mayan Face Sunrise Hike & Antigua

We’re starting early today - embarking on a short hike under the moonlight to the summit of Mayan Face Mountain, named for its distinctive silhouette that resembles a face from below. The real splendour reveals itself at the top, as the sun rises and unveils the breathtaking beauty of Lake Atitlán. To complete this memorable experience, our local guides will treat us to some hot cocoa. After descending, we’ll enjoy breakfast with our local families, bid them farewell, and head to Antigua.

  • Day 15

    Antigua

You’ll have some well-deserved free time to explore the charming colonial town of Antigua, a favourite among both tourists and locals. With its stunning Spanish architecture, delightful cafés, and cozy restaurants, there’s plenty to enjoy. Have your cameras on ready - Antigua is a photo opportunity at every corner!

  • Day 16

Volcano Acatenango or Chocolate Making Experience*

Lace up those hiking boots—it's time to tackle one of the towering volcanoes we've only seen from a distance until now. This hike is challenging, but it’s bound to become one of your all-time favourites. After several hours, we’ll approach the summit of Acatenango Volcano, where the air will grow thinner and we’ll find ourselves up among the clouds, with views that are truly spectacular. As the sun sets, we’ll reach our basecamp for the night and the view of Guatemala's most active volcano Volcan Fuego, "Fire Volcano”, will come into view. This volcano frequently ejects bursts of lava, and as the sun sets, the fiery orange glow of its eruptions will be an unforgettable spectacle.

*The Acatenango overnight volcano hike is quite challenging, taking up to 7 hours to ascend, and requires a reasonably good level of fitness. The trek involves steep sections and rugged terrain, which can be demanding at high elevations. You will need some warm layers, decent trainers or hiking boots and travel insurance that covers hikes up to 4000m. The volcano hike is EPIC, however you can choose not to do it, if so we will provide you alternative accommodation and a just-as-epic traditional chocolate making experience in Antigua. For more info on the hike and alternatives see our FAQ’s or contact us.

  • Day 17

    Antigua

As with any adventure, what goes up must come down. After descending from the volcano, we’ll have the chance to freshen up and spend a bit more time exploring the streets of Antigua, revisiting any sights you might have missed. Then, it’s time to dress up for a memorable final dinner and drinks in Guatemala. But don’t worry—there’s still plenty more excitement ahead!

  • Day 18

    Fly to Costa Rica!

Who’s ready for yet another country? A short included flight will take us to our fourth destination—Costa Rica! Upon landing in San José, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture and explore the city, depending on our arrival time. San José boasts excellent museums where you can start learning about this incredible country firsthand. We’ll head out for our first dinner in Costa Rica, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet some new travel companions and gear up for the next exciting leg of our journey.

  • Day 19

San José Walking Tour & Travel to La Fortuna

Today, we dive into the rich culture and history of San José and Costa Rica with a walking tour of the city. Our group leader will highlight the intriguing architecture and historical landmarks around every corner. Next, we’ll leave the city behind and journey to La Fortuna, with a stop at the Ox Cart Museum along the way. These beautifully decorated carts were essential to Costa Rican farm life and have become a national symbol. Upon arriving in La Fortuna, the gateway to Costa Rica’s stunning wilderness, you’ll be struck by the majestic Arenal Volcano that dominates the skyline. Once a farming community, this charming town is renowned for its geothermal activity and wellness retreats nestled in the jungle.

  • Day 20

    Hanging Bridges & Volcanoes

Adventure calls as we venture into the rainforest, crossing breathtaking hanging bridges that weave through the jungle. Lush trails stretch ahead, offering a chance to spot some of Costa Rica’s most incredible wildlife and plant life. And if we’re lucky, we’ll catch a breathtaking view of Arenal Volcano. We’ll venture into the jungle after dark to discover its nocturnal wonders. But rest assured, we’ll be guided safely by an enthusiastic expert who will share fascinating local insights and secrets along the way.

  • Day 21

Local Family Farm Visit & Natural Hot Springs

This morning, we’ll visit a local family who has lived in La Fortuna for generations. They’ll guide us around their farm, where we may spot some wildlife that shares their home. You’ll learn about the harvesting of local fruits and vegetables, and have the chance to taste some exceptionally sweet fruits. We'll sit down for a traditional Casado lunch, accompanied by freshly brewed coffee from their own farm. This afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to relax in natural hot springs, renowned for their healing properties due to the volcanic mineral waters. It will feel like stepping into a fairytale oasis—an ideal way to unwind and rejuvenate.

  • Day 22

Río Celeste & Travel to Rincon de la Vieja

Our journey continues as we depart from La Fortuna, first making a quick stop at a traditional Maleku house. The Maleku are one of Costa Rica's indigenous peoples, and this visit offers a rare opportunity to learn about their traditional way of life. Next, we’ll head to the renowned Río Celeste National Park. The water here, including the stunning cascading waterfall, is a brilliant diamond blue. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive in Rincon de la Vieja, a lesser-known gem that offers a peaceful retreat from the crowds and a chance to reconnect with nature. We’ll check into our jungle accommodation and soak in the incredible sounds of the natural surroundings.

  • Day 23

Rincon de la Vieja National Park

Prepare your hiking shoes for an adventure along jungle trails as we explore the incredible biodiversity of Costa Rica in Rincon de la Vieja National Park. This morning, we’ll trek through the park’s trails, visiting volcanic vents and mud pits, and discovering its rich array of wildlife, which includes over 300 species of birds, monkeys and reptiles! This afternoon, you can choose to relax by the hotel pool, soaking in the tranquil sounds of the jungle. For those craving a thrill, you’ll have the option to soar through the forest canopy on a ziplining adventure, gliding above the misty treetops and descending into the mountain.

  • Day 24

    Arrive to Samara

Our journey continues as we head towards Samara. As we approach Samara, you can start to unwind and soak in the idyllic scenery. Beach volleyball, relaxing in the sun, sipping on cocktails - how you spend the afternoon is all up to you!

  • Day 25

    Samara Beaches & Surf Lesson

Start the day strong with an unforgettable surf lesson, learning to ride the waves with local legends who know these waters like the back of their hand. Whether you're standing up for the first time or a seasoned pro, this is your chance to embrace Costa Rica’s surf culture at its finest. Next up its white sand beaches, sun-drenched skies, and swaying palms as we head up the coast to a more secluded beach of Guanacaste. Untouched by mass tourism, this beach is a true gem of Costa Rica. Kick back with a good book, swim in calm waters, play a few games of football… whatever your beach vibe, we can make it happen.

  • Day 26

    Beach Time in Samara

Today is a free day entirely dedicated to exploring all that Samara has to offer —thank us later! Whether you're in the mood for a relaxing yoga session or something more active like a surf lesson or sea kayaking with snorkelling, there's an activity to suit your interests. Of course, simply lounging by the sea with a cold drink and soaking up the sun is always a great option. Enjoy and make the most of your holiday!

  • Day 27

    Esterillos & Crocodiles

Heading south, we make our way to Esterillos, a laid-back beachside gem. We’ll also make a stop at the Crocodile Bridge, where you have the perfect vantage point to see these prehistoric creatures, perhaps being grateful to keep our distance.

  • Day 28

Manuel Antonio National Park & Beaches

Today, we set our sights on the spectacular Manuel Antonio National Park, so keep your camera ready! It's no surprise that this is Costa Rica’s most visited national park, as you'll discover during our exploration of its lush jungles and stunning beaches. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, including the famous sloths everyone loves. After our jungle adventure, we’ll head to the park’s incredible beaches for some fun in the sun. The pristine shores are truly paradise, but be on the lookout for the cheeky monkeys that share this tropical haven with us.

  • Day 29

    Travel to San José

Leaving the coast behind, we head back to San José, where our journey began. We'll stop off for a delicious cultural experience - Cacao making! Frequently asked questions

  • Is tipping expected?

There is no requirement to tip on any INTRO trip. However there is a big tipping culture in Central America, and it is customary and expected that you tip a small amount in most places including bars and restaurants. While we cover all of our local suppliers wages and expenses it is customary for group members to offer a tip to drivers and local guides on Central America Intro, if you feel you’ve had good service. Your group leader can provide more detail on how you can contribute and suggested tip amounts whilst on tour if you feel comfortable doing so. You can find more info on spending money in the INTRO Travel App.
  • How demanding is the Acatenango overnight volcano hike, what do I need to do?

The Acatenango overnight volcano hike is EPIC but quite challenging, taking up to 7 hours to ascend, and requires a reasonably good level of fitness. The hike involves steep sections and rugged terrain, which can be demanding at high elevations. You will need some warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a good pair of trainers or hiking boots and travel insurance that covers hikes up to 4000m. This is usually an add-on to standard travel insurance. There is a chance that you may be affected by the high altitude, and may experience some mild symptoms related to acute mountain sickness (AMS), such as a headache or feelings of nausea. This is completely normal, however we recommend checking with your GP before travel if you have any concerns prior to your trip regarding travel to altitude, or how high altitude may affect any pre-existing conditions you may have. The volcano hike is included in the price of the tour, however you can choose not to do it if you don’t feel comfortable with it’s difficulty. If so please let us know prior to your tour departure and we will provide you alternative accommodation and a traditional chocolate making experience in Antigua for that night and following day as a substitute, at no extra cost. If you choose to do the hike but do not make it all the way, we will ensure you get safely to alternative accommodation for the night, however this accommodation will be at an extra cost to you as it is on top of the hike costs already incurred by us. If you have any more questions about the volcano hike or alternatives just contact us.
  • What luggage do you recommend?

We always recommend travelling with a backpack and packing light! 10-20kgs of stuff should be plenty. It’s generally quite hot so dragging around a huge suitcase is not much fun. There is luggage storage at the airport or at some accommodations if needed.
