Travel from Boston to New York City over nine days on a journey that blends scenic landscapes with iconic cities. Head through New England into French-speaking Québec, exploring historic Québec City and vibrant Montréal. Continue to Ottawa and Toronto, before experiencing the sheer power of Niagara Falls. Crossing back into the USA, you’ll pass through the Finger Lakes and visit Gettysburg, then discover Amish traditions in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Explore the landmarks of Washington, D.C., and stop in historic Philadelphia en route to Manhattan. This itinerary offers a rich mix of culture, history and unforgettable highlights.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Boston
Arrive at Logan International Airport and make your own way to the hotel. In the evening, we meet our Tour Director and fellow travellers. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2
Boston to Québec City
Boston - Quebec City. This morning, we travel through the rural landscapes of New Hampshire and Vermont en route to Canada. Along the way, we pass small, picturesque villages and the White Mountains - particularly striking during the autumn foliage season. We cross the border into the French-speaking province of Québec. You may wish to visit a traditional maple farm, and this evening you can sample classic French-Canadian cuisine (optional).
Day 3
Québec City to Montréal
Quebec City - Montreal. We begin with a guided tour of Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural heart of French Canada. Highlights include the Provincial Parliament Building, the Citadelle and the historic Old Town. We continue on a walking tour within the fortified city walls, where we see Château Frontenac and enjoy views over the St Lawrence River. There may be time to explore Rue du Trésor or enjoy a local pastry before we depart for Montréal. On arrival, we tour Old Montréal, including the Vieux Port, Place Jacques-Cartier and Notre-Dame Basilica.
Day 4
Montréal to Ottawa to Toronto
Montreal City - Ottawa - Toronto. We depart Montréal for Ottawa, Canada’s capital, known for its green spaces and impressive Parliament buildings. In the afternoon, we continue along the Thousand Islands Parkway towards Toronto, the largest English-speaking city in Canada, set on the shores of Lake Ontario. You may choose to join an optional cruise along the St Lawrence River to take in the scenery.
Day 5
Toronto to Niagara Falls
Toronto - Niagra Falls. We start the day with a drive through Toronto, passing its modern skyline, including the CN Tower - one of the tallest free-standing structures in the world. You may choose to step onto the glass floor observation deck (optional). We then follow Lake Ontario, crossing the Welland Canal, before arriving at Niagara Falls. Here, we take in views from Table Rock, see the Floral Clock and witness the power of the Horseshoe Falls. You may also join an optional Hornblower cruise to the base of the falls.
Day 6
Niagara Falls to Gettysburg to Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Niagra Falls - Gettysburg - Harrisburg. Today we travel through upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region before entering Pennsylvania. In the afternoon, we visit the Gettysburg Civil War National Battlefield - the site of the largest battle fought on American soil and where President Lincoln delivered his famous address in 1863. We continue along the Susquehanna River to our overnight stay in southern Pennsylvania.
Day 7
Pennsylvania Dutch Country to Washington, D.C.
Harrisburg - Washington DC. We travel through the countryside to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, where we visit an Amish museum and learn about their centuries-old traditions and simple way of life. In the afternoon, we continue to Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States.
Day 8
Washington, D.C.
Today we enjoy a city tour, including the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the White House and Arlington National Cemetery, where the JFK Memorial is located. You have free time to explore the Smithsonian museums or take a walk along the Potomac River.
Day 9
Washington, D.C. to New York City - Departure
Washington DC - New York. We travel to New York City via Philadelphia, where we stop to see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell - key landmarks in the founding of the United States. The tour ends in Midtown Manhattan at approximately 17:00. Our Tour Director will be available to assist with onward travel arrangements if you are departing this evening.
