Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Tangier

Arrive at any time. Attend a welcome meeting at the joining hotel in the evening before an optional group dinner to get to know your fellow travellers.

  • Day 2

    Tangier/Tétouan

Travel to Tétouan, a northern city in Morocco along the Martil Valley and a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar. Along the way the group will embark on a thrilling hike to Gite Monte Blanco (838 m) nestled amidst the rugged Rif Mountains and enjoy a picnic lunch from the top before the return trip. Arrive in Tetouane in the late afternoon for a walking tour of several historical landmarks throughout the city like El Feddan Square and the Royal Palace. Dinner is on your own.

  • Day 3

    Tétouan/Chefchaouen

In the morning leave Tetouan and travel to Chefchaouen, known for the’ striking blue-washed buildings of its old town. From the outskirts of town begin today’s hike through the scenic Rif Mountains passing small waterfalls and streams reaching the Spanish Mosque featuring amazing views of the city below. Then, take part in a hand-on goat cheese making experience with a local family followed by lunch where you'll share delicious traditional Moroccan dishes. When the group arrives back in Chefchaouen there will be a CEO-led walk through the ‘Blue City’.

  • Day 4

    Chefchaouen

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then visit Oued ElKannar, the Rif region’s top ravine and enjoy a trek along a scenic trail through this dramatic canyon that is popular for its clear turquoise pools and plunging waterfalls. Finish the hike with a dip in the gentle nearby river for the perfect taste of nature in Morocco’s quaint countryside. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the river or at a local restaurant depending on the season, and then travel back to Chefchaouen for a free evening and dinner on your own.

  • Day 5

    Chefchaouen/Fès

Head to Fés, considered the cultural capital of the country and enjoy a guided medina tour through the Fés medina, which happens to be one of the largest in the world. Enter through one of the great gates and wander down some of the 9,000 winding streets found here. Observe local tannery workers from the balcony of a leather shop and take some time to search for meaningful souvenirs of your own. The rest of the evening is free to explore on your own.

  • Day 6

    Fès/Khenifra

Depart for Khenifra, a city in Northern Morocco surrounded by the Atlas Mountains. Along the way the group will stop for a hike with a local guide through cedar forest and past many scenic viewpoints for a total 15km. Afterwards, have lunch by the lake with a local family before continuing on to Khenifra. Dinner will be had at the hotel this evening.

  • Day 7

    Khenifra/Bin El Ouidane

Begin the day with a morning drive to Afourer. Upon arrival, explore the vibrant local market and enjoy a fresh, local-style lunch. After lunch, continue on to Bin El Ouidane, where the group will enjoy a kayaking activity on the lake followed by some well-deserved rest and free time to take in the beautiful surroundings.

  • Day 8

    Bin El Ouidane

Start your morning at a local host family’s home for tea and breakfast in this idyllic setting. Engage in the age-old tradition of bread-making as you deepen your connection to the local culture’s culinary heritage. Then enjoy a morning guided hike to Imsfrane Cathedral — the natural marvel resembling a cathedral carved by nature is well worth the hike through Morocco’s rugged terrain to see these towering rock formations. After catching your breath and admiring the beauty, hike back to the local family's home to enjoy lunch with the bread you made this morning! Spend a free evening back at the hotel in Bin El Ouidane before a group dinner.

  • Day 9

    Bin El Ouidane/Marrakech

Drive to Marrakech in the morning where the tour ends upon arrival in the early afternoon.

Customer reviews & ratings

  • A great way to visit interesting and the less explored parts of the Rif and High Atlas mountains - gave us an insight into the culture and peoples of the area. Would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to get a true feel of the country Generally a wonderful experience but one of the day's description was not quite as described so couldn't give you the full 10

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the physical activity level for the 'Active Morocco: Rif Mountains' tour?

This tour has a Physical Rating of 3, indicating an active level. It involves hiking in stunning locations like Gite Monte Blanco, the Ouad El Kennar trail, and to Imsfrane Cathedral, as well as activities like kayaking.
  • What type of accommodation is provided on this tour?

You will be staying in local hotels or pensions for all 8 nights. These are typically locally-run establishments with traditional character and central locations. Please note that facilities may vary; some might not have elevators or air-conditioning, and plumbing can be quirky due to Morocco being a developing country. Expect occasional cold showers.
  • Which meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 8 breakfasts, 6 lunches, and 3 dinners. Moroccan breakfasts are generally simple, often consisting of a croissant or sweet roll with jam and instant coffee. Lunches and dinners will introduce you to famous Moroccan cuisine, with typical meals costing between 10-15 USD.
  • What are the main cultural experiences and highlights of this tour?

Highlights include a walking city tour of historical landmarks in Tetouan, a hands-on goat cheese-making experience with a local farming family in Chefchaouen, a CEO-led orientation walk of the 'Blue City' of Chefchaouen, a guided visit to the Fés medina (one of the largest in the world), and a bread-making lunch with a local family in Bin El Ouidane.
  • What is the maximum group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 14 travellers, with an average group size of 10.
  • Will there be a tour leader, and what is their role?

Yes, a Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will accompany the group throughout the trip. The CEO acts as the group coordinator and manager, providing general knowledge of Morocco (historical, cultural, religious, social), suggesting activities and local eating venues, and introducing local friends. Certified local city guides are also used for specific sites.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the tour?

Transportation between destinations and for included activities will primarily be by private vehicle, 4x4, and walking.
  • Are there any age restrictions for participants on this tour?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on this tour. For minors travelling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.
  • What should I know about the local currency and payment methods in Morocco?

The local currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are common and widely accept Cirrus and Plus system cards, though it's important to check with your bank before departure and advisable to travel with more than one type of card. Visa cards are widely accepted for larger purchases, usually with a fee. Euros are the most commonly accepted foreign currency for exchange. A combination of cash (Euro/GBP or USD) and cards is recommended.
  • Is tipping customary in Morocco?

Yes, tipping is a way of life in Morocco and is customary for service providers. The tour operator uses a tipping kitty system where your CEO will collect a contribution from everyone at the start of the tour to tip service providers for the group as a whole. For your CEO, tipping is also expected and appreciated, with $8-11 USD per person per day being a general guideline.
  • What cultural dress expectations should I be aware of?

When visiting mosques and other religious monuments, you should dress modestly, covering your shoulders and avoiding short shorts or skirts. Outside of capital cities and more touristic centres, local dress is often more conservative, and as a matter of respect, both men and women are recommended to wear loose-fitting clothes with shoulders covered. Your CEO can offer more specific advice.
  • What are the weather conditions like in Morocco during different seasons?

The climate in Morocco is Mediterranean along the coast, becoming more extreme inland. Summers (April to September) can be very hot, up to 50°C, particularly from mid-June. Winters (November to March) can be cool to cold, especially in the Atlas Mountains, with high probability of snowfall and temperatures down to -6°C. Most Moroccan buildings are not equipped with heating, so appropriate layering is crucial for colder months.
  • What impact might local holidays like Ramadan or Aid Al-Adha have on the tour?

During Ramadan (fasting month), there might be limitations to services and disruptions to schedules, though tours generally operate effectively and food is available to non-Muslims. During Aid Al-Adha, most shops and restaurants may be closed, some historical places might also close, and there may be fewer staff at hotels. It's very important to display increased cultural sensitivity during these periods, including wearing loose-fitting clothes that cover knees and shoulders, and avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory to participate in this trip. You will need to provide evidence of insurance to your leader, covering at a minimum medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation (minimum USD200,000 coverage). Personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage are strongly recommended.
  • What safety advice should I consider during the tour?

In major cities, use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and mind your personal belongings. A neck wallet or money belt is strongly recommended for valuables. Leave valuable jewellery at home, and use hotel safety deposit boxes. During free time, use your own good judgment for optional activities, and it's recommended to stay in small groups and take taxis at night. Your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) has the authority to amend the itinerary if safety concerns arise.
