Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Welcome to Tokyo!

Welcome to Japan! Meet your Adventure Leader and fellow travellers in the hotel lounge for a trip briefing for your first taste of what’s ahead on this incredible journey.

Once you’re in the know, it’s time to dive right in with a sizzling teppanyaki welcome dinner. Expect bold flavors, plenty of laughs, and the perfect moment to snap that first group photo!

But the night’s just getting started, we’ll head out to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to watch its dazzling light show, a breathtaking first look at Tokyo after dark.

  • Day 2

    Tokyo

Start your morning with a hands-on sushi masterclass, where you’ll learn to slice, roll, and taste your own creations under the guidance of expert local chefs. Afterwards, step into the peaceful surrounds of Meiji Shrine – Tokyo’s iconic sanctuary dedicated to Emperor Meiji. Here, your Adventure Leader will collect a charm for each of you and share the story behind omamori, Japan’s traditional tokens of protection and good luck.

Please note: the sushi class may take place in the afternoon depending on the supplier’s schedule.

Next, immerse yourself in Tokyo’s trendiest district – Harajuku – a vibrant hub of bold fashion, colourful street snacks, and youth culture. No visit to Tokyo would be complete without experiencing the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, where we’ll also stop by to see the beloved Hachiko Statue. Fancy a different perspective? Head up to Shibuya Sky for a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the crossing below and the city skyline beyond.

After an action-packed day, we’ll make our way back to the hotel to relax and recharge for the adventures ahead.

  • Day 3

    Tokyo

Today, we swap Tokyo’s neon lights for a glimpse of old-school Japan. Step back in time with a visit to Shibamata, a nostalgic neighbourhood that feels straight out of the Showa era. Stroll along Taishakuten Sando, a charming shopping street lined with traditional stores, tasty snacks, and local souvenirs, before exploring the beautifully carved Shibamata Taishakuten Temple. From there, we’ll head to Asakusa – another historic pocket of Tokyo brimming with culture and character.

As evening falls, get ready for something truly special – a sumo experience with dinner. Meet and chat with former sumo wrestlers, hear their fascinating stories, take some memorable photos, and tuck into a hearty bowl of Chanko Nabe, the traditional dish that fuels Japan’s strongest athletes.

  • Day 4

    Hakone

Today, we trade Tokyo’s lively energy for Hakone’s crisp mountain air. Board the Romance Car express and soak up the scenic journey out of the city to Hakone Yumoto, where you’ll have time to enjoy lunch before the adventure continues.

From there, we’ll take a bus to Moto-Hakone and set sail on a pirate ship cruise across Lake Ashi. With its grand decks and sweeping views, it’s one of the most memorable ways to experience Japan’s famous volcanic lake. On clear days, keep your eyes peeled for the ultimate backdrop – majestic Mt Fuji rising above the horizon.

(Please note: Mt Fuji’s visibility varies depending on the weather.)

Next, we’ll ride the cable car high over the steaming volcanic landscape of Owakudani for breathtaking views and a taste of Hakone’s wilder side. After a day packed with adventure, we’ll return to our accommodation for a well-earned rest. Slip into the soothing waters of a traditional onsen and unwind after a truly unforgettable day.

  • Day 5

    Kyoto

This morning, we’ll make our way to Odawara Station to board the legendary Shinkansen bound for Kyoto. Sit back, relax, and watch the Japanese countryside race by at incredible speed — before you know it, we’ll arrive in Japan’s ancient capital. After dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we’ll begin our Kyoto adventure with a visit to Higashi Honganji Temple. With its vast wooden halls, tranquil atmosphere, and even a rope made from human hair used during its reconstruction, this temple is as intriguing as it is beautiful.

In the afternoon, it’s time to tap into your creative side with a Japanese calligraphy class. With brush, ink, and paper in hand, you’ll learn the elegant strokes of this centuries-old art form and create your very own keepsake.

As evening falls, it’s all about letting loose – grab the mic and belt out your favourite tunes at karaoke night. From power ballads to guilty pleasures, it’s the perfect way to bond with your crew and wrap up the day on a high note.

  • Day 6

    Kyoto

This morning, we’ll slow the pace with a serene Camellia Tea Ceremony. Watch the elegant rituals behind the art of preparing and pouring matcha, then try your hand at whisking your own bowl before savouring it with traditional Japanese sweets. For an extra-special touch, you can even rent a kimono to make the experience truly unforgettable.

Next, we’ll visit the magnificent Kiyomizu-dera Temple. With its sweeping wooden terrace, hillside views, and centuries of history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks. Afterwards, enjoy some free time to browse the nearby shops and grab a bite to eat at your own pace.

In the afternoon, we’ll step into Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets. Join a guided Gion tour to uncover the rich history of geisha and the district’s timeless traditions, before strolling along Pontocho Alley – a lantern-lit lane brimming with teahouses, riverside restaurants, and old-world charm.

The evening is yours to explore. Whether you fancy sampling street eats at Nishiki Market, shopping along Teramachi Street, delving into samurai and ninja history, or catching the mesmerising GEAR non-verbal theatre show, Kyoto promises something for everyone tonight.

  • Day 7

    Kyoto-Hiroshima

This morning is all about exploring Kyoto your way. Watch the sunrise through the iconic red torii gates of Fushimi Inari, wander the peaceful gardens of Nijo Castle, admire the shimmering beauty of the Golden Pavilion, or lose yourself among the towering stalks of Arashiyama’s bamboo forest. Feeling adventurous? You could even take a short trip to Nara to meet its famously friendly deer. Prefer a slower start? A relaxed morning in Kyoto is always a good idea – though sunrise at Fushimi Inari is one for the memory books.

By the afternoon, we’ll regroup with your Adventure Leader and hop aboard the bullet train bound for Hiroshima. This evening, we’ll share a meal together and dig into a local favourite – Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savoury layered pancake bursting with flavour and best enjoyed in good company.

  • Day 8

    Hiroshima-Miyajima

Our first stop today is Miyajima, a postcard-perfect island that feels like it’s been lifted straight from a dream. As the ferry glides across the bay, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Itsukushima Shrine’s famous floating torii gate rising from the water – one of Japan’s most iconic sights. We’ll explore the shrine grounds before taking the ropeway up Mt Misen, where sweeping views await. You can ride it both ways for a relaxed experience, or channel your inner explorer and hike back down through the lush forest trails.

Later, we’ll return to Hiroshima to visit the Peace Memorial Museum with an audio guide – a deeply moving experience that tells powerful stories of resilience, reflection, and hope for the future.

  • Day 9

    Okayama

All aboard the bullet train – today we’re heading to Okayama. Our first stop is the Kurashiki Bikan Quarter, a beautifully preserved district filled with old-world charm. Stroll along its canal-side paths lined with willow trees, browse traditional shopfronts and cosy cafés, or treat yourself to something sweet from one of the local stalls. For the perfect postcard moment, you can even take a leisurely boat ride along the canal and soak up the timeless scenery of this former merchant town.

Next, we’ll visit Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens. With its elegant landscaping, seasonal colours, and peaceful ambience, it offers a stunning glimpse into the refined beauty of the Edo period.

By the afternoon, we’ll hop back on the bullet train and make our way to Osaka. After checking in at the hotel, the evening is yours to explore. Take it easy or dive straight into the neon buzz of Shinsekai. Feeling peckish? Follow the locals and sample kushikatsu – Osaka’s famous deep-fried skewers – the perfect way to end the day.

  • Day 10

    Osaka

On your final day, we’ll start with a leisurely stroll along Shinsaibashi, Osaka’s bustling shopping street packed with quirky shops, tasty snacks, and plenty of spots perfect for photos. You’ll have some free time here to enjoy lunch and hunt down any last-minute souvenirs.

In the afternoon, we’ll trade the streets for the water on a Dotonbori boat cruise, gliding past Osaka’s neon-lit skyline and seeing the city from a completely new perspective.

As evening falls, we’ll reunite for a farewell dinner at a local favourite – the perfect opportunity to share your highlights and celebrate an unforgettable adventure across Japan.

  • Day 11

    Osaka

Sadly, today’s the final day of your Japan Plus Culture Tour – time to say your goodbyes in Osaka! If you’re heading back to Tokyo, no worries – we can help arrange your Shinkansen tickets.

Essential trip information

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much should I budget for food and drink?

It really varies depending on your taste and budget. You can get a simple meal such as a bowl of ramen for £2 or go for high class sushi. Generally, we take travellers to affordable restaurants and recommend budgeting £15-20 a day for food and drink.
  • What's included?

Western and Japanese (english-speaking!) adventure leaders. Free Japanese tuition for beginners Accommodation in hostels and hotels which meet our high standards. All have their own unique Japanese charm, and at the same time are safe, clean, and hygienic. All train, boat and bus tickets. Entry to a whole range of places plus a generous number of included activities All taxes and charges.
  • Do I need to bring power converters?

The voltage in Japan is 100 Volts, which is different from North America (120V), Central Europe (230V) and most other places. Japanese electrical plugs have two, non-polarized pins. They fit into North American outlets. Japanese power outlets are identical to (2-pin) North American outlets. While most Japanese outlets these days are polarized (as in one slot is slightly wider than the other), you can find non-polarized outlets in some places.
  • Who looks after our bags when we’re on transport and/or day excursions?

The bags will be stored at the hostels where they are tagged and recorded. On a couple of occasions, they will be stored at storage facilities in railway stations.
  • Suitcase or backpack?

Suitcase is OK, but a backpack/hold-all is much more convenient.
  • What kind of restaurants will we go to?

Your Adventure Leader will always offer to take you for a group meal, where we go to a local restaurant, which we know is hygienic and has cheap and delicious food. If you are craving Western food, then there are lots of great options!
  • What should I pack for my trip?

We strongly recommend packing very light for trip. You can wash your clothes at most places we stay or pick up some supplies in the plentiful Japanese shops.
  • Will my phone work?

Your non-Japanese phone is unlikely to work but it’s possible to buy a SIM out there or use wifi for internet.
  • I’m a vegetarian/have allergies – will I be able to get the right food?

Yes! With so many food choices, Japan can meet the needs of individuals with special dietary needs or requests. Just tell your Adventure Leader and they can help you find something suitable. You will probably discover a new dish that you love!
