Summary

Embark on a journey through the heart of China, traveling from its political and historically rich capital to the scenic and relaxed pace of Hangzhou, and concluding in the world's most populous city, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and captivating colonial history. This brief Beijing to Shanghai tour provides a snapshot of both urban and rural facets, offering travelers a condensed yet immersive experience of this diverse and fascinating country.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Beijing

Embark on an extraordinary journey with our Beijing to Shanghai tour, commencing with a rendezvous with your Adventure Leader in the late morning. Brace yourself for an unparalleled adventure as we head straight to one of the world's wonders – the Great Wall! Before our exhilarating hike, we'll recharge with a hearty lunch at a local farm. In the mid-afternoon, we'll tread on secluded, unrestored sections of the Wall, setting up camp to witness the breath-taking sunset from this iconic vantage point.

[Please note: Due to cold weather before the end of April and after the end of September, we stay in a guesthouse near the Wall, instead of camping.]

  • Day 2

    Beijing

Wake up to catch the sunrise over the Great Wall – an unforgettable way to start the day (weather permitting!). Once you’re back in Beijing, the rest of the day is yours to explore. Wander the cool galleries of the 798 Art District, stroll through the beautiful gardens of the Summer Palace, or team up with your travel crew to tick off more of the city’s highlights.

  • Day 3

    Beijing

Start your morning with the option to stroll across Tiananmen Square before stepping into the mighty Forbidden City, the largest palace complex in the world. With 980 buildings and a history of 24 emperors, this place is full of stories. For the best views in town, climb up Jingshan Park and take in the palace grounds from above. In the evening, you can choose to watch an incredible Chinese acrobatics and circus show or sit down to try Beijing’s most famous dish, Peking Roast Duck, once reserved only for royalty.

  • Day 4

    Hangzhou

Your last day in Beijing is all yours! Bag a bargain at the city’s famous fake goods markets, wander the peaceful grounds of the Temple of Heaven, or jump into the electric Nanluo district with its winding hutongs, hidden courtyards, quirky cafes and bars. When evening rolls around, grab your bags and hop on the night train to Hangzhou – next stop, new adventures!

  • Day 5

    Hangzhou

Wake up in Hangzhou and fuel up with a late breakfast before heading out to explore! Sail across the dreamy waters of West Lake and hop off at one of its scenic islands. If you’re up for more exploring, you can check out the National Tea Museum, the Silk Museum or the ancient Lingyin Temple. As the afternoon fades, make your way up Jiuyao Mountain for a sunset that is seriously worth the climb! If you’re feeling up to it, round off the night with dinner and a stroll along Hefang Road, Hangzhou’s most famous old street, packed with tasty snacks, local shops and plenty of atmosphere.

  • Day 6

    Shanghai

Start your morning with a captivating hike to the Nine Creeks, weaving your way through the enchanting Misty Woods. Upon returning to the hostel, take some time to refresh and enjoy lunch before checking out, preparing for the next leg of your journey.

In the afternoon, set out for the next destination on your China backpacking tour – Shanghai! Once you arrive in the city, you might choose to take a night cruise along the Huangpu River and watch the skyline light up in style.

  • Day 7

    Shanghai

Indulge in a leisurely morning before embarking on an engaging Mandarin lesson with a unique twist – led by professional instructors from the Mandarin Garden Chinese Language School.

In the afternoon, explore the historic Yu Gardens, once the opulent residence of a dignitary, followed by a visit to People’s Square and the bustling Nanjing Road, the world's busiest shopping street. Wander along the iconic Bund, a showcase of global architecture, and cap off your day by savouring Shanghai's skyline from a rooftop bar on the top floor of a skyscraper. The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure!

  • Day 8

    Shanghai

Enjoy a full day of exploration in the vibrant city of Shanghai, where history, culture, and modernity converge. Seek recommendations from your Adventure Leader for personalized tips, but consider these exciting options:

    • Disneyland Shanghai
    • The Shanghai Museum
    • Moganshan Art Street
    • Zhujiajiao Watertown

Cap off your day by venturing out for a night on the town with your fellow adventurers!

  • Day 9

    Shanghai

Embark on a fascinating morning exploring Shanghai's diverse facets. Options include a stroll through the former French Concession to delve into the city's international history, a visit to the Propaganda History Museum, and a glimpse of the ultra-modern Shanghai financial district. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the local artistry at TianZiFang, blending chic and tradition.

For the adventurous, ascend Jinmao Tower for a Skywalk or enjoy panoramic views from the top. In the evening, soak in the city's luminous skyline during a night cruise down the Huangpu River.

  • Day 10

    Shanghai

Today concludes your incredible Beijing to Shanghai tour. Feel free to journey homeward or continue your travels. We sincerely hope you've relished your time with us!

  • Amazing experience that will stay with me forever! The tour of the Dragontrip was well organized and included many highlights of the three cities we visited, Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. As a first time traveller to China, I felt very well cared for. The adventure leaders were extremely approachable and went above and beyond to make sure, everybody had a great trip. My personal highlight was the camping on the Chinese Wall.
