Sri Lanka Group Tours for Solo Travellers
Sri Lanka packs an enormous amount into a small island — ancient rock fortresses, misty tea plantations, wildlife safaris, and golden beaches, often just a few hours apart. That variety, combined with how manageable the country is to get around, makes it one of the most rewarding places to travel solo, and one of the easiest to do it well on a small group tour.
Our Sri Lanka tours are single-country itineraries, giving you time to properly explore rather than rush between stops. Highlights typically include climbing the Sigiriya rock fortress, exploring the tea plantations around Ella and Nuwara Eliya, riding one of the world's most scenic train journeys, spotting wild elephants on safari, and finishing on the beaches of the south coast. You'll be travelling with a small group led by a local guide, with the structure to see it all and the free time to explore in your own way.
We also have a number of multi-country combo tours that combine Sri Lanka with a sailing adventure in the Maldives or the highlights of neighbouring India.
At The Adventure People, we specialise in small-group tours for solo travellers. Browse the tours below, or get in touch with our team if you want help picking the right one for you.
Is Sri Lanka safe for solo travel, especially for solo women?
Sri Lanka is generally considered a welcoming and manageable destination for solo travellers, and it's a popular choice for solo women booking with us. As with travelling anywhere, it's worth dressing modestly at religious sites and taking normal precautions, and travelling as part of a small group tour with a local guide adds an extra layer of reassurance.
What's the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that affect different coasts at different times, so the "best" time depends on your route. Broadly, December to March tends to suit the south and west coasts, while the east coast has better weather from May to September.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Most visitors need to arrange an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, which is separate from a full visa and can usually be applied for online. Requirements vary by nationality, so it's worth checking the current process well ahead of travel.
What's the food like, and can dietary requirements be catered for?
Sri Lankan food is flavourful and varied, built around rice, curry, and fresh spices, with plenty of vegetarian dishes as standard rather than an afterthought. Let us know about any dietary requirements when booking so we can flag anything you need to be aware of.
What currency should I use, and is it easy to access money?
The Sri Lankan Rupee is the local currency. ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns, though it's worth carrying some cash for smaller towns, tuk-tuks, and markets where card payments aren't always accepted.
How many other solo travellers will be on my trip?
It varies by tour, but solo travellers typically make up the majority of the group — often 60% or more — and most of these are women. You'll rarely be the only one travelling alone.
Will I have to share a room?
By default, solo travellers are paired with someone of the same sex to share a room at no extra cost. If you'd prefer your own room, this is usually available for a supplement, subject to availability — just let us know when you book.
How do I meet the rest of the group?
You'll typically meet everyone in person on day one, often at a welcome meeting at your accommodation. Your guide will be there to introduce everyone and get the trip started.
Is there free time to explore on my own, or is it fully guided the whole time?
Every itinerary mixes guided activities with free time. You're never obligated to spend every moment with the group — plenty of solo travellers use the free time to explore independently, then reconnect with the group later.
Is it safe to travel solo on one of these tours?
Small group tours are one of the most reassuring ways to travel solo, since you're never navigating a new country entirely on your own. You'll have a local guide throughout, a group to explore with, and support on hand if anything comes up.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is required for all our tours. It's your responsibility to arrange cover before travelling, and your guide may ask to see your policy details at the start of the trip.
Can I choose a group of people closer to my own age?
Yes — alongside our general Sri Lanka tours (which attract a broad mix of ages), we offer a dedicated range of 18-30s tours across many of the same destinations, for solo travellers who'd rather travel with people in a similar age bracket.
If you're older and prefer an extra level of comfort, our premium tours generally attract travellers aged between 50-70 and come with upgraded accommodation, private transport and exclusive experiences.
