Machu Picchu isn’t just a place—it’s an experience.

And to protect this ancient wonder while enhancing your journey, Peru’s government has introduced a streamlined route system that all visitors must now follow.

Understanding these routes (or "circuits") is key to planning your perfect visit. This guide walks you through everything you need to know—starting with what the routes are, why they were created, and which one is right for you.

📍 What Are the Machu Picchu Routes?

As of June 1, 2024, entry to Machu Picchu is organized into three official circuits (replacing the previous five). When you buy your ticket, you must select one circuit and one route within it.

Each circuit has:

  • A fixed path through the site

  • A time limit for your visit

  • Specific points of interest (and restrictions)

  • A limited number of entry slots per day

Think of them as curated tours—each offering a different way to explore the Citadel.

🌱 Why Were the Routes Introduced?

The new route system was created for two main reasons:

  1. Preservation of the Site:
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and one that was facing pressure from growing tourism. These fixed routes help control foot traffic and minimize erosion on sacred ground.

  2. Improved Visitor Experience:
By spreading out visitors and offering different experience types, the new system makes your visit more focused, peaceful, and safe—whether you’re here to hike, admire the views, or learn about Inca history.

⭐ Which Is the Most Common Route?

Circuit 1 – The Panoramic Circuit is by far the most popular and widely recommended. It is included with the standard entry ticket and is ideal for first-time visitors.

Why?

  • It provides access to the iconic panoramic viewpoints.

  • It requires less walking than full ruin circuits but still offers epic scenery.

  • It includes optional hikes to special sites like Machu Picchu Mountain, Sun Gate, and the Inca Bridge.

For most travelers, Circuit 1 offers the perfect balance of scenery, accessibility, and experience—without the need for expensive supplements or intense physical effort.

🔍 A Closer Look: The 3 Machu Picchu Circuits

🧭 Circuit 1 – Panoramic Circuit (Most Recommended)

Entry ticket: S/152–S/200 | Time limit: 2.5–7 hours

This circuit focuses on upper terraces and scenic lookouts. It does not allow access into the central ruins but provides the famous “postcard” view that most travelers come for.

You can choose one of four routes:

🥾 Route A: Machu Picchu Mountain

  • 3-hour roundtrip hike to the highest point in the area (3,082m / 10,111 ft).

  • Incredible 360° views of the entire Machu Picchu complex.

  • Less crowded than Huayna Picchu.

  • Entry ticket (with mountain access): S/200

📸 Route B: Upper Terrace

  • Short and easy path to both main observatories.

  • Ideal for photos, families, and light walkers.

  • Time limit: 2.5 hours

🌄 Route C: Sun Gate (Inti Punku)*

  • Seasonal access (high season only).

  • Follow in the footsteps of Inca Trail hikers to this ancient entry point.

  • Time limit: 4 hours

🌉 Route D: Inca Bridge*

  • A hidden stone pathway built into a cliff.

  • Fascinating and scenic, but you can't cross the bridge itself.

  • Time limit: 3 hours

Sun Gate and Inca Bridge routes are only available June–October.

🏛️ Circuit 2 – Classic Circuit (Premium Supplement)

Entry ticket: S/152 | Time limit: 2.5 hours

This is the only circuit that takes you inside the main archaeological complex—into temples, ceremonial spaces, and central ruins.

You can choose from two options:

Route A: Classic

  • Includes Temple of the Condor, Sacred Rock, Water Mirrors, and Quarry.

  • Best for history lovers and those wanting close-up exploration.

Route B: Lower Terrace

  • Similar to Classic, but skips some lookout points.

  • Still includes core ruins and photo opportunities.

⚠️ This route is in high demand and should be booked well in advance.

👣 Circuit 3 – Royal Circuit (Adventure Supplement)

Entry ticket: S/152–S/200 | Time limit: 2.5–7 hours

Focused on the lower part of Machu Picchu, Circuit 3 pairs exploration with access to famous hiking extensions.

🧗 Route A: Huayna Picchu Mountain

  • Steep and narrow trail to the peak seen in most Machu Picchu photos.

  • Includes access to Temple of the Moon, lower ruins, and jungle scenery.

  • Ticket: S/200 | Time limit: 6 hours

🏞️ Route B: Lower Machu Picchu

  • Easy route focused on structures like Temple of the Sun and Water Mirrors.

  • No upper terrace access.

🌌 Route C: The Great Cavern*

  • Seasonal hike to the mystical Temple of the Moon.

  • Remote and quiet, for experienced hikers.

🌿 Route D: Huchuy Picchu Mountain*

  • Short, lesser-known hike with views back toward the Citadel.

  • Great for a more relaxed hike alternative.

Routes C & D only open during high season (June to October).
