UK’s Fastest Growing Adventure Travel Company Launches New Trip Empowering Women

In reaction to a growing trend of women seeking bucket list adventures after lockdown,  The Adventure People are delighted to launch a new women’s-only trek to Everest Base Camp for 2022. Working in partnership with a local, female run specialist trekking company, owned by Nepalese entrepreneur Ms. Bhatta, this  14 day trek is created by women, for women. The trek will be led by local Nepalese female mountain guides, a profession that is traditionally dominated by men across the Himalaya.

Over 60% of people who book with The Adventure People are women, and according to the company's recent booking data, women are far more adventurous than men, with increased searches for bucket list adventures after the last year in lockdown. The company has also seen an increase in inquiries for women-only departures, so decided to create an adventure which not only provides a safe space for female guests, but also for the women fighting for change in the communities they visit.

Chris Roche, CEO at The Adventure People states that “we are over the moon to take this step with Ms. Bhatta and her team in Nepal to create this experience which empowers all women involved. This trip creates employment opportunities for local Nepalese women, providing them with training, guiding and management skills. Keeping the trip women-only creates a safe space for the female trekking guides who are breaking down barriers and prejudices, whilst providing a life changing adventure for our female clients. We hope this project is the first of many”.

With Nepal being one of the top destinations in the world for trekking, it is estimated that out of 22,000 trekking guides in the country, only around 886 are female. The population of women in Nepal is 25% higher than that of men but only 22% of those of the age to work do so. This is not for lack of ambition but opportunity.

Ms. Bhatta, who is working tirelessly to change these statistics, explains that “we are delighted to partner with The Adventure People on this epic trek to help support local women here in Nepal. Girls and women in Nepal, especially those living in rural areas, continue to face discrimination and domestic violence due to the patriarchal culture and their lack of knowledge, skills, emotional support, and economic opportunities.

The status of women in Nepal remains very poor in terms of health, education, income, decision-making, and access to policy making. With various training courses like this one that The Adventure People are supporting, girls and women not only gain knowledge and skills – they learn to be assertive, they recognize their inner strengths, they take charge of their own lives and lead by example. We hope this project goes from strength to strength”.

A portion of this new trip cost will go towards training more local Nepalese female guides, a process that takes two years per guide, and provides the candidate with full guiding qualifications.
