Why you should travel to… Guatemala

Antigua
One of the most Instagram friendly towns in all of Latin America, due to its colonial colourful buildings and cobblestone streets. Also listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, Antigua is a very cultural town with jazz festivals and museums. The town is also famous for its markets where you can buy Guatemala’s signature colourful textiles. For the best views in the city, visit a rooftop restaurant such as Antigua Brewing Company where you can enjoy the sunshine and views of the surrounding volcanoes.
Lake Atitlan
Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanoes and its shores are dotted with Indian villages all of which have retained their distinctive cultures – the local dress and colours varies from village to village, and market stalls line the narrow streets. Here you can do yoga at a Yoga Farm, scuba dive in volcanic vents or climb up the hill call Indian’s Nose. There’s something for everyone at this spectacular place nicknamed the “bellybutton of the world” by the Mayans.
Tikal Ruins
Some of the most famous Mayan ruins are here in Guatemala. Tikal might also be the oldest and largest ruins of them all. Over 3,000 buildings make up this ruined city up in the jungle. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Guatemala as well as another UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can climb on top of some of the ruins for spectacular views and visit the Great Plaza to see the old palace and pyramids called Temple 1 and 2.
Market at Chichicastenango
When in Guatemala you can’t miss one of the largest markets in Central America! In the Mayan town of Chichicastenango, located in the jungle, locals travel from all over the country to sell their crafts and textiles.
Rio Dulce
Or “Sweet River” as it translates, begins at Lake Izabal and is a popular destination where you can embark on boat rides, kayaking or curling up and relaxing in a hammock surrounded by the beautiful nature. By boat you can visit the Caribbean town of Livingston where you can try some local seafood and on your way back, stop by the a floating garden of lily pads.
