Iceland is a nature lover and photographer's dream! For such a small country it sure has a lot of incredible places to see and things to do. Here we break down some of our favourite activities and places to do and see. We'd also love to hear what you think! If you've been to Iceland and have a story to share please email hello@theadventurepeople.com
Let's face it you come to Iceland to get in touch with its beautiful nature. So what better way to truly experience it than by camping? We offer tours where you will have your own car that has a built in tent on the roof. Comfortable and adventurous at the same time, you have the freedom to roam around the country as you please, and at night you have THE best spot for star gazing - or Northern Light gazing for that matter too.
Perhaps one of the biggest reason people, especially photographers come to Iceland is in hopes of seeing the enigmatic green lights appear of the sky, also known as Aurora Borealis. Visit in winter (September to April) for the best chance to see them. There are no guarantees that you will see them unfortunately, but to give yourself the best chance, head out of Reykjavik and city lights and into the country side. Of course you could get lucky and see them your first night, but if it's your main reason for coming to Iceland, give yourself at least a week for your best chance at spotting them.
A trip to Iceland of course would not be complete without seeing the beautiful capital of Reykjavik. Two thirds of Iceland's population lives here. You may have come to Iceland to experience nature but Reykjavik has so much to offer as well. Museums, historical buildings, famous restaurants and markets where you can buy great souvenirs. Summer is a great time to visit as it's quite warm and you get up to 22 hours of sunlight.
The Golden Circle is a popular 300km route in Southern Iceland. Drive around it to see the Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir, and Thingvellir National Park. Geysir is a famous hot spring which rarely erupts but nearby Strokkur spouts 15-20 meters of water about every 10 minutes which is definitely worth watching.
Another one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls. The land beneath it is very flat which means you can walk right up to this 25 meter drop waterfall and get some stunning photos. You can also climb 370 steps to the top of the waterfall to get equally incredible photos from the top of the fall as the water is plummeting down.
Nicknamed the "icy crown jewel of Iceland". Although it has only existed for less than 100 years, the lagoon continues to swell as temperatures rise.On some of our tours you have the option to explore the lagoon via the water. Board an amphibious vehicle (half car, half boat) to get the most awe-inspiring views of the jagged icebergs floating in this natural lagoon. If you’re lucky, you might even see sea seals swimming gliding through the water or resting on icebergs. Otherwise, you are free to bike or walk along the shore, taking in the majestic views of blue and white waters.
Reykjavik is great, but don't forget to visit the smaller villages as well. Here you will find the famous "Black sand beach" where you can take a walk on the black lava formed rocks from the nearby Katla volcano. There are also great hiking trails near Vik.
Probably the most famous lagoon in the world. Yes, it will be busy and full of tourists but remember that people come here for good reason. The crystal blue water is hard to pass up and well worth the visit.
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe and has therefor been nicknamed "The Beast" whereas the Goðafoss waterfall has been nicknamed "The Beauty". Dettifoss has a drop of 44 meters and Goðafoss only 12, but instead boasts a stunning rounded shape and turquoise looking water. Both breathtakingly spectacular in their own right. Visit them both to compare and see why they got their nicknames. There are also great hikes around them, perfect for a day trip.
Visit spectacular caves where lava has flowed down after a volcanic eruption and created beautiful formations on the walls and ceilings of the caves. There are not many places in the world where you can see this so we definitely recommend a visit when you're in Iceland.
