Resting high in the Andes on the border between Peru and Bolivia, the tranquil blue water of Lake Titicaca has been home to many cultures and civilisations that date back even before the Incas arrived. The indigenous people of Peru believe that Lake Titicaca is the birthplace of the sun, and it’s easy to understand why when you watch the sun seemingly rise from the perfectly still lake. At 3812 metres, it is the highest navigable body of water in the world, and the largest lake in South America.

What’s so good about it?

If you’ve just done The Inca Trail then you’ll probably be feeling pretty exhausted and in need of some downtime. Well, there is perhaps no better place to rest after doing The Inca Trail than Lake Titicaca. It is the epitome of tranquillity with life seemingly moving in slow-motion, almost like time runs differently. Being so high up and a tad closer to the stars, the cool nights gazing up at the flying comets are breath-taking, and the days are often bright and pleasant – after all, it is the birthplace of the sun! There’s also lots to do and see on Lake Titicaca.

What to do on Lake Titicaca?

The Floating Islands of Islas Uros Named after the Uru people who made them, the floating islands of Lake Titicaca were built from bundles of reeds to house families and protect them against invaders like The Inca Empire. You can take a boat trip to see the islands and get a glimpse into this unique way of life.

Watch the shooting stars

On a clear night at Lake Titicaca, when you look up at night, you really will feel like you’re on the highest lake in the world. There is little to no light pollution making it a great spot to stargaze and count the shooting stars. Want to ensure the weather is just right for stargazing? Read our blog on the Best time to go to Peru and Machu Picchu.

Visit Isla Del Sol

‘The Island of the Sun’ is the largest island on Lake Titicaca with plenty to do and see, like the Gold Museum and the Fountain of Youth. It’s also a fantastic place to just walk and take in the pristine scenery.

Where to stay on Lake Titicaca?

Lake Titicaca is huge, so you’ll need to have a good idea of where you want to stay. This will probably depend on what you want to see, and perhaps where your next destination is. Puno If you’re travelling around Peru and this is part of your itinerary before heading off to Arequipa, or to trek The Inca Trail, your best bet is probably Puno on the Peruvian side of the lake. This is a good base if you want to take a trip to see The Floating Islands of Islas Uros. There are also wonderfully quaint little cafes in Puno with amazing coffee and delicious local food. Copacabana Is Bolivia your next stop? If so, Copacabana is a great place to stay as it’s just a few hours from La Paz, and it’s got lots going on like its religious festivals, the Museo del Poncho, Cerro El Calvario, and Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana. It’s also where you’ll need to be if you want to visit Isla Del Sol.

How long to spend on Lake Titicaca?

Whilst it is the largest lake in South America, you don’t have to spend ages there to get a good experience of Lake Titicaca. You can stay just a few days and have a wonderful time, which makes it the perfect place to rest after The Inca Trail. At over 3000 metres above sea level, it’s also a great place to acclimatise before doing the trek. Read more about acclimatising to high altitudes in our blog, How to avoid altitude sickness while trekking.
