Solo Travel - Answers To Questions We Sometimes Get Asked!

Chris is the CEO of The Adventure People and has over 20 years experience in the travel industry.

Did you know that around half of the people who book with The Adventure People are solo travellers.  This is not to be confused with being single!  Many have partners but sometimes for various reasons want to travel alone.  Its also true that travelling solo is becoming more and more popular and lots of people are travelling alone for the first time.  Understandably we get lots of questions from solo travellers so we thought it might be helpful to answer some of the most common questions in this post.  We hope this is useful!

1. How do the tours work?

Each tour has a minimum and maximum number of guests.  Often the minimum is 1 and the maximum 16 but this can vary.  Adults of the same gender are paired together to share rooms which keeps the accommodation costs down (and is a great way to make a friend!).  each tour has a guide (unless you're on a self guided trip) who will be looking after you for the duration of the tour.  They're there to make sure you have everything you need, guide the way and make sure you have a good time.  The group travels together but on any given day there is free time built in to either socialise or do your own thing.  Pending the tour your on meals may be included in which case the group will eat together but often even when meals are not included the group still eat together!  From start to end the guide will ensure every day runs smoothly and be there to help, answer any questions and be a support in case required.

2. Can I find out who else is on a tour?

Yes you can.  If you have a tour and a date or two in mind just ask us on chat or call us on 0208 004 8886 and we can find out for you.

3.  Who do I share a room with?

You'll share a room with someone of the same gender.  If there is an odd number of people you may end up with your own room.  If you prefer to share then you can always let us know and so you'll be sure to be sharing.

4.  Can I get my own room?

On most trips you are able to pay a little extra to have your own room.  Some trips don't have this option (some of the sailing trips spring to mind).  Each tour lists the extra amount if a single room is available or not.

5.  What are the age ranges?

The age make up of any group will differ not just by tour but even by date.  The average age across all tours is around 40.  However, some tours have a maximum age of 29, some 39 and some 100.  If you'd like to get an idea of the average age of a tour your interested in please ask us and we can let you know.

6.  What if I don't like who I am sharing a room with?

Although rare, this does happen from time to time.  The best thing is to let your tour leader / guide know as soon as possible and they will help with a solution.

7.  Are there any female only tours?

Yes there are some and they're becoming more popular but they sell out very quickly.

8.  What is the best place to go as a solo traveller?

We are not sure we can answer this!  As the tours stretch the globe our answer is anywhere the tours go.  We often tell customers the best thing to do is think about where you'd like to go and what you'd like to do and then we can help:)  With over 5,000 trips we are sure we'll find something for you.

9.  Why do I have to pay a single supplement?

Pries are always based on to adults sharing a room to keep prices down.  All tours work on 2 people sharing, its partly price but also partly based on a social aspect of group travel.

10.  How do I meet the group?

When you've made your booking and paid the balance you'll receive joining instructions.  These instructions will give details on your hotel and what time you'll meet the group and guide.  Typically this is late afternoon on day 1.  During the meeting you'll meet the group, the guide will give any news  and updates and usually the group will go out together for dinner.

11.  How do I get from the airport to the hotel?

We recommend a taxi.  You can pre-book a taxi with us for all trips or some people just hail a taxi outside the airport.

12.  Will I have to eat by myself?

You do not have to eat by yourself!  You can choose to either at with others or on your own.  Where meals are included the group always east together.  Where meals are not included more often not the entire group or some members of the group agree to eat together, the guide will often organise this.

13.  What happens if my meals aren't included?

If your meals aren't included in the tour the guide will organise meals and help along the way.  The guides are experienced in knowing where is good to go and the options available so will be able to direct you.

14.  Can I get together with someone on the group?

That's up to you and the other consenting adult!  It is quite common for people to develop a relationship shall we say whilst on a tour.  We should say though the tours are not designed for people to get together!  They're not dating tours but it can and does happen from time to time.

15.  Do I get my own bathroom?

On almost all tours the bathrooms are private, see the individual tour details for the accurate information for that tour.

16.  What happens if I get ill?

The guide / tour leader will help.  They will be able to provide basic medicine, if your condition is serious they will arrange professional medical help.

17.  What happens if I snore or am sharing with someone who snores?

If you snore you might want to let you know who you're sharing with before hand so they can take measures such as purchasing ear plugs.  If you're sharing with someone who snores we advise ear plugs but if it is really harming your sleep please let the tour leader know ASAP.
