Holiday Overview: Home to the most via ferratas in France, the southern French Alps offers a diverse range of thrilling routes. On this specialized short break, we handpick some of the finest for you to conquer.
Your adventure includes 5 of the best via ferratas in France from the historic first via ferrata of France, established in 1988 at Freissinières, to the renowned Grande Fistoire, famed for its expansive tyrolean zip lines.
Each day, your guide will meet you at your hotel to lead you through a new valley filled with unique via ferrata adventures.
The difficulty levels of the via ferratas on this trip range from easy to challenging. We've scheduled the more demanding routes towards the end of your journey, allowing you to gradually enhance your climbing skills and confidence. Many of the routes begin easily and increase in difficulty, with opportunities to exit early, ensuring flexibility to accommodate varying skill levels within the group without disadvantaging anyone.
Your Stay in Gap: Set in the picturesque town of Gap, located in the core of the southern French Alps on a vast plateau encircled by striking mountains, your holiday base offers a perfect gateway to numerous via ferrata routes.
Food: In the evenings, Gap offers a diverse selection of restaurants and bars where you can indulge in the local cuisine. We're happy to recommend our favourite spots and make reservations for you if desired.
Regarding lunches, some days will require a packed picnic, while other days you'll have the chance to dine in local restaurants. Decisions on the best option for each day will be made collectively with guidance from your guide.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival

Today, you'll independently travel to Gap and settle into your hotel. We're happy to assist with planning your journey, drawing on our extensive experience.
We recommend gathering in the hotel lobby at 18:30 to connect with fellow travelers before heading out for a dinner in the town. If needed, we can suggest and secure reservations at local restaurants for you.
You can check into your rooms from 16:00. If you arrive earlier, we can arrange for your luggage to be stored at the hotel, allowing you to freely explore Gap. This picturesque Alpine town exudes a Provencal charm and features a delightful pedestrian area where bars and restaurants spill out onto the streets and squares.
Day 2
Via Ferratas in the Dévoluy

The Devoluy: The Devoluy region presents a stunning, wild limestone massif that remains largely pristine, providing a habitat for wolves and various Alpine wildlife.
Via Ferrata Gorges D'Agnielles: Experience a breathtaking 500m via ferrata route along a steep cliff above the gorge. The initial section is easy enough for children as young as seven, yet it offers exposure and thrilling heights. It’s possible to conclude this section with an abseil descent. The subsequent part ramps up in intensity, beginning with a challenging 50m vertical climb, winding through impressive limestone waves, and culminating in a series of exposed vertical climbs that lead back to the trail.
Lunch Options: Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in St Etienne, located near the start of the afternoon's via ferrata, or opt for a relaxing picnic by the stream after the morning's climb. (lunch at your charge)
Via Ferrata Les Etroits: This challenging and dramatic 1100m via ferrata traverses a deep, narrow gorge. The route takes you through caves and past blocks wedged between cliffs, creating an engaging and complex path. There is an easier route available that allows for an early exit before tackling the more demanding, athletic sections.
Day 3
Via Ferratas in the Ecrins Massif
Via Ferrata La Falaise in Freissinieres:
Embark on a journey through the historic Via Ferrata La Falaise, the first recreational via ferrata established in France. Conceived by Lionel Condemne in 1988, this route offers a profound glimpse into the heritage of via ferrata. Spanning 1000m with a 200m ascent, the route begins easily and increases in difficulty, leading to breathtaking views over the Freissinieres valley and its striking limestone cliffs—a testament to the vision that inspired Lionel. This is a quintessential via ferrata that every enthusiast should experience.
Lunch Options:
Choose between picnicking or dining at a restaurant situated between the two via ferrata excursions. (lunch at your charge)
Via Ferrata Gorges d'Ailefroide:
Selected for its distinctive granite rock, the Via Ferrata Gorges d'Ailefroide offers a contrasting experience to earlier climbs. This route accommodates all skill levels with its two segments: the first, an easier 300m stretch, zigzags across the gorge, featuring three monkey bridges and various pathways along the rock face. The more challenging 350m segment includes a technical wire bridge and follows a steeper, more physically demanding route to the final pillar before descending back down the path.
Day 4
Via Ferrata La Grande Fistoire and Return Home
This morning, you will need to check out of the hotel, but we can arrange to store your bags if necessary. If you'd prefer to stay an extra night and travel back tomorrow, we can organize that as well.
Today marks the grand finale of your trip, as we head to what we consider the best via ferrata in the French Alps, La Grande Fistoire.
Via Ferrata La Grande Fistoire:
Prepare for a half-day adventure on this spectacular via ferrata. The route begins with an ascent up the cliff face, leading to the first wooden swing bridge. The bridge exits steeply onto a narrow ridge, setting the stage for the next major challenge—a wire bridge that ushers you into the tougher part of the via ferrata, featuring a steep wall and a ladder that climbs directly to the summit.
We'll enjoy our lunch (picnic at your charge) at the summit, taking in the breathtaking views, before making our descent via three thrilling tyrolean zip lines. These zip lines, measuring 150m, 130m, and 220m, offer a heart-pounding experience and are not for the faint-hearted. Unlike larger zip lines where you are in a full body harness, these use the classic sit harness and pulley system, allowing you to fully experience the g-force and exposure as you zip over the deep chasm!
We plan to return to Gap by mid afternoon, giving you ample time to catch your train or bus and begin your journey home.
