Itinerary
Day 1
Colombo
Arrive at Colombo International Airport, where you will be welcomed by our representative. We then travel inland towards Dambulla, passing through increasingly lush and hilly countryside as the climate becomes cooler. On arrival in Dambulla, we check in to the hotel. For a smooth start to your journey, we recommend arriving at Colombo Airport before 10.00 am. Overnight in Dambulla.
Day 2
Dambulla
After breakfast, we set out to explore the remarkable heritage of Sri Lanka. Our day begins with a visit to Sigiriya, the fifth-century fortress dramatically perched atop a 200-metre-high rock known as Lion Rock. Built by King Kashyapa, this ancient citadel was once the heart of a fortified city, later reclaimed by the jungle until its rediscovery and archaeological restoration. We climb to the summit, where panoramic views stretch across the lush landscape.
In the afternoon, we travel to Polonnaruwa, the island’s medieval capital. This UNESCO-listed site dates back around a thousand years and features an impressive array of ruins, including the remains of a royal palace, temples, and administrative buildings. We explore highlights such as the Gal Viharaya, renowned for its four striking Buddha statues, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, and the statue of King Parakramabahu. We also visit the Shiva Temple, Lankathilake, Watadage, and Galpotha before returning to our hotel in Dambulla for the night.
Day 3
Dambulla
We begin the day with a visit to the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most significant pilgrimage destinations. Set within five ancient caves, this temple complex features intricate murals and over 150 statues depicting the Buddha, deities, and Sri Lankan kings. After exploring the temple, we travel to Matale to visit a spice and herb garden, where you can observe the cultivation and uses of renowned Sri Lankan spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, and cardamom. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea as you learn about their therapeutic properties. Our journey continues to Kandy, where we explore the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. Established in the 14th century and later expanded by the British, these gardens are celebrated for their diverse plant collections, including orchids and spices, and feature historic trees planted by visiting royalty. In the evening, we attend a cultural show in Kandy, showcasing traditional Sri Lankan dances and drumming, culminating in an impressive fire-walking performance. Overnight in Kandy.
Day 4
Kandy
After breakfast, we visit the renowned Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the most revered Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. Built in the 16th century to enshrine a relic of the Buddha’s tooth, the temple is an important pilgrimage destination and features striking architecture, including the Golden Canopy and the New Palace. You will also see the Royal Palace, the old courthouse, the Queen’s Bathing House, the National Museum, and the temple sanctuary. Take time to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and impressive design.
Later, we travel to Colombo for an afternoon city tour. The capital’s lively streets blend modern skyscrapers with colonial-era buildings, offering a unique glimpse into Sri Lanka’s past and present. We explore the bustling Pettah bazaar, visit Hindu and Buddhist temples, and drive through elegant residential areas lined with grand mansions and stately homes. We also pass by the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. You will have some free time for shopping before we transfer you to your hotel for the night. Overnight in Colombo.
