  • Day 2

    Tokyo

In the morning, we set out on an enthralling guided tour of Tokyo, lasting around five hours. This fascinating city is a spectacular blend of dynamic modernity and peaceful quietude. Our exploration begins with a brief visit to Zojoji Temple, offering a classic view of Tokyo Tower. Here, you'll find numerous Jizo statues, traditionally regarded as protectors of children, each adorned with colourful knit caps, bibs, and windmill figures.

We then immerse ourselves in the bustling atmosphere of Shibuya Crossing, reputedly the busiest intersection globally, before heading to the serene Meiji Shrine, a dedication to Emperor Meiji and his consort. Our journey continues by bus along the stylish Omotesando Avenue towards the elegant surroundings of the Imperial Palace gardens, where we pause to admire the renowned Nijubashi Bridge.

As we continue, we traverse the lively Akihabara district, known as "Electric Town," a cultural haven for manga and anime enthusiasts. We then pass the Kokugikan, Japan's iconic sumo wrestling arena, before concluding our tour in Asakusa with a visit to the historic Sensoji Temple and the bustling Nakamise Street. Lunch will be provided at a local eatery.

In the evening, at 6:30 p.m., we reconvene with our guide in the hotel lobby and take the metro (tickets are covered) to the vibrant Shinjuku district. Here, you'll enjoy an evening stroll through its energetic streets, famous for their lively nightlife, as we head to a local restaurant for dinner, which is included. Following our meal, we return to the hotel via metro, accompanied by our guide.

  • Day 3

    Tokyo

Today, we'll embark on an exhilarating journey aboard the bullet train, leaving Tokyo early in the morning for the remarkable city of Kyoto. In a little over two hours, well traverse nearly 500 kilometres, arriving in a city famed for its historical and cultural significance. Kyoto, Japan's former capital from 794 to 1868, is a treasure trove of artistic heritage, having survived World War II unscathed. This city also hosted the signing of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, a crucial step in the global effort to combat climate change.

Our exploration of Kyoto will take in some of its most renowned landmarks. We'll visit the captivating Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its famous torii gates and stunning vistas. Following this are stops at the Imperial Palace and Kinkakuji, the breathtaking "Golden Pavilion, surrounded by serene gardens.

After an enriching tour, youll have the chance to wander through the streets of Gion at leisure. This traditional district is celebrated for its geishas and vibrant atmosphere, offering a glimpse into the cultural heart of Kyoto. Enjoy some free time to soak up the unique ambiance before the day's end.

  • Day 4

    Kyoto

On Day 4, we depart for Tsumago, where you'll find yourself enchanted by the picturesque countryside unfolding en route to this delightful village. Renowned for its traditional wooden houses, Tsumago is considered one of the most charming spots in Japan. Here, you'll have some free time to wander and explore its quaint streets before enjoying a complimentary lunch. Our journey continues as we move on to Matsumoto, a vibrant tourist hub. En route, we'll visit Matsumoto Castle, a striking structure from the 16th century famously known as "The Crow" due to its distinctive black exterior. Following the visit, you'll have the opportunity to discover Matsumoto at your own leisure. As the day winds down, we will travel to Nagano, where we will spend the night, soaking in the experiences of a day filled with history and natural beauty.

  • Day 5

    Nagano

In Nagano, we begin by visiting the revered Zenko-ji Temple, a significant pilgrimage site that houses the first Buddhist image brought to Japan. Here, we participate in the Gomakuyo ceremony, a special ritual believed to bestow blessings and good fortune. Our adventure continues as we journey into the picturesque Japanese Alps, heading to Jigokudani Monkey Park nestled in the mountains. As you savour lunch, youll be surrounded by scenic beauty. A gentle walk through lush forests, alongside tranquil rivers and bubbling hot springs, offers you the chance to observe the famous Japanese macaques as they frolic and bathe.

We then ascend to dramatic alpine scenery, reaching heights of up to 2,172 metres and passing semi-active volcanoes. Our day takes us onwards to Kusatsu, a delightful spa town known for its vibrant main square. Youll enjoy a leisurely stroll through the city park, with its charming open-air onsen. From here, we move to the idyllic spa town of Ikaho, famous for its historic centre with quaint, stair-stepped streets. Tonight, experience the comfort of a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Relax in the soothing baths and indulge in an included authentic Japanese dinner.

Please note, during autumn, the availability of mountain fruits can affect the behaviour of the monkeys, potentially leading to park closures. Additionally, from November to April, the visit to Kusatsu may be subject to weather-related changes.

  • Day 6

    Day 6

We journey onwards to the captivating town of Nikko, renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Our visit begins at the impressive Nikko-Toshogu Shrine, a magnificent complex famed for its "Crying Dragon" room, where incredible acoustics echo the roar of a dragon. We continue to the serene Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum, an awe-inspiring testament to Japan's spiritual and architectural heritage. The tranquil atmosphere is complemented by our walk along the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, where rows of Jizo statues gaze over the riverbanks, creating a peaceful and reflective experience. You'll have some free time to explore the charming town centre at your leisure. We then return to Tokyo, arriving at around 6:30 p.m. As this marks the conclusion of our journey, remember to check your flight details if you need an extra night's stay.
