Summary

Experience the climb of the highest peak in North Africa, Mount Toubkal summit 4167m (13600fit), get a stunning views of the Atlas Mountains, green valleys & Berber villages, meet the Berber guided & muleteers go for the this adventure of your life time....Mount Toubkal 4167m is the highest peak in North Africa, and is a trekking peak involving no climbing. Two days involve walking in crampons holding an ice axe for security (Nov to April ) . The itinerary has been designed for keen walkers, as the ascent is non-technical, but involves some easy scrambling and snow slopes. The views from the summit are amazing across the mountains to Marrakech to the north, and the start of the Sahara to the south. All around are the jagged peaks of the High Atlas stretching as far as you can see in every direction.

Our Azzaden route will lead you to the top exploring two main valleys of the Atlas. You will avoid the too trekked approach and the "up and down " the same way.

  • Amazing experience of a 3 day trek to Mt. Toubkal. Our guide Ibrahim was knowledgeable, kind and caring but still careful and encouraging. We enjoyed the whole plan very much, including the amazing food.

Essential trip information

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I rent a sleeping bag before the trip?

Equipment needed can be rented locally in Imlil before starting the trek
  • Can you recommend a riad to stay before the trip?

Riad View Point in Marrakesh is a great option that we can book for you, and we'd also reccomend the Ouirgane Ecolodge not far from Imil, in the Atlas mountains if you would like a day to relax before your return to the hustle and bustle of the city.
  • Why this route?

We'd recommend at least 3 days to climb Toubkal if you have it as it makes your chances of success much higher. This is a great option as it's a round trip rather than coming back down the same route.
  • How difficult is this climb?

Toubkal is moderately difficult due to the altitude you will climb to so it should not be booked at the last minute (with out time to train) unless you are exercising regularly. If you plan ahead most people can complete it with the right training! From a technical perspective it's relatively easy, with no special skills being required for summer climbs. We would recommend including several long day walks, including ascents and descents in this - the gym is good, but not enough if you haven't done any hill walking before.
  • When is the best time to go?

You can climb Toubkal year round (in the Winter we would recommend having prior hiking experience) but in the spring, April and May provide cool, comfortable temperatures, with little rain or snowfall, and in the autumn, September and October tend to mirror those conditions. If you're looking to avoid the crowds, the shoulder seasons of late May/early June and late August/early September are a good time to go.
  • Can I add airport transfers?

Yes, we can book airport transfers to any accommodation booked through us, and transfers from the airport are included if you arrive on the first day and depart on the last. On this trip, that makes things quite tight though!
  • What should I pack?

Here’s a comprehensive packing list for your Mount Toubkal trekking adventure in spring and summer: Clothing Trekking Boots – Sturdy, waterproof boots with good ankle support. Socks – Moisture-wicking, thick trekking socks (3–4 pairs). Lightweight Hiking Trousers – Comfortable and breathable. Thermal Base Layers – Long-sleeve top and bottoms (even in summer, it can be cold at higher altitudes). T-Shirts – Lightweight, moisture-wicking shirts (2–3). Fleece or Insulating Layer – Warm mid-layer for colder temperatures. Lightweight Waterproof Jacket – Windproof and waterproof jacket for rain and wind protection. Down Jacket – Lightweight, compressible jacket for extra warmth (especially for early mornings and nights). Sun Hat or Cap – To protect from the sun. Warm Hat – For colder nights or early morning summits. Gloves – Light gloves for hiking; warmer ones for summit day if necessary. Scarf or Buff – To protect against wind and sun. Accessories & Gear Backpack – A 30-40L daypack for daily treks (with hydration system or water bottles). Sleeping Bag – Lightweight sleeping bag rated for 0°C to -5°C (in case of cold nights at higher altitudes). Trekking Poles – To help with balance and reduce strain on steep descents. Sunglasses – UV protection for your eyes (high-altitude sun can be intense). Headlamp or Torch – With extra batteries (for early starts or late arrivals). Water Bottles – Hydration system or 2-3L water bottles (essential for the dry conditions). Sun Protection – High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a UV neck gaiter or buff. Camera or Smartphone – For capturing stunning views. First Aid Kit – Basic kit with plasters, antiseptic, pain relief, blister care, and any personal medications. Personal Items Passport & Copies – Keep a copy separate from your original for safety. Travel Insurance Details – Print out your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers. Snacks – High-energy snacks like nuts, energy bars, and dried fruit for the trail. Camera or Smartphone – For photos and navigation. Wet Wipes or Hand Sanitizer – To stay fresh on the trail. Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, and any other personal hygiene items. Towel – A small, quick-drying travel towel. Power Bank – For charging electronics during stops (ensure it's fully charged). Optional Items Gaiters – To protect your legs from snow or mud. Trekking Sandals – For relaxing at camp after the day’s trek. Earplugs – In case of noise at the refuge. Camera or Smartphone – For photos and memories. Notebook or Journal – If you like to document your trip. Important Considerations Layering System: In spring and summer, temperatures can vary greatly from the lower valleys to the summit. Make sure you have lightweight, breathable layers, as well as warmer options for summit day and evenings. Weather Variability: Be prepared for sudden changes in weather, with potential for both sun and rain, as well as colder temperatures at higher altitudes. This list ensures you’re well-equipped for the trek while keeping your pack as light as possible for the challenging hike.
  • How do I carry my luggage on the trek?

A max 90 Litre, 20kg, Duffle bag or similar soft bag is required to pack to be carried by mules or porters. In winter please ensure you bring a bag with straps as these will be carried by porters for the last stretch rather than mules. Luggage not required on trek can be left in Imlil, or your accommodation in Marrakesh if relevant. You will need a comfortable small daypack to carry your belonging to need through the day.
