Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Into the Highlands

Hobart - Bothwell - Miena. Today, you will be picked up from the designated pick-up point before we travel north through the historic village of Bothwell to Waddamana, site of Tasmania’s first hydro-electric power station.

We’ll pause for a picnic lunch along the way as we pass through the high country to Miena and on to Lake Augusta. Arriving at Thousand Lakes Lodge in the early afternoon, we’ll have time to settle in before heading out on a gentle alpine walk.

This evening, we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner in the lodge’s cosy dining room, then unwind by the fire and soak up the tranquillity of our Central Plateau Highlands surroundings.

Meeting point: Travelodge Hotel Hobart, 167 Macquarie St, Hobart TAS 7000, Australia before 9 AM.

  • Day 2

    Exploring the Central Plateau

Miena - Central Plateau - Miena. This morning, we set out to explore the Central Plateau Conservation Area, a remote landscape of subalpine moorlands, glacial tarns and exposed ridgelines shaped by ancient ice. We’ll walk through this striking terrain on guided or self-guided walks, with options including Allisons Hut, Lake Ada and Ibbott’s Hut. Along the way, we’ll learn about the plateau’s glacial past and keep an eye out for native wildlife such as wombats, quolls, wallabies and Tasmanian devils, as well as a rich variety of birdlife.

After a day immersed in nature, we’ll return to the lodge for a hearty dinner. This evening, take time to stargaze beneath the clear skies of Tasmania’s Dark Sky Reserve. You may even catch a glimpse of the Southern Lights.

  • Day 3

    Further into the Plateau

Miena - Central Plateau - Miena. Today, we continue our journey through the rugged beauty of the Central Plateau. You may choose to walk to a remote hut, follow the shoreline of a glacier-carved lake or simply take time to absorb the silence and shifting light of this alpine environment. The ever-changing weather and scenery make it an ideal setting for photography or quiet moments of reflection.

Wildlife is often most active in the early morning or evening, offering opportunities to spot native species in their natural habitat. Back at the lodge, we’ll enjoy the warmth of the lounge, local wines and a hearty evening meal. After dinner, step outside to take in the vast night sky and experience the stillness of this remote wilderness.

  • Day 4

    Return to Hobart

Miena - Hobart. This morning, you will have some free time to explore the area at your own pace and try your luck spotting a platypus before breakfast. Once we’ve checked out, we begin our return journey towards Hobart, taking a break at The Steppes, where we’ll discover stories of the region’s pastoral past and enjoy a short walk among sculptures and local heritage features.

As we leave the highlands behind, the dramatic alpine scenery gradually shifts to open farmland and greener valleys. We expect to arrive back in Hobart by early afternoon at approximately 1 PM, with drop-off at city hotels or a transfer to the airport for flights after 3 PM, depending on your onward plans.

Drop-off point: Travelodge Hotel Hobart, 167 Macquarie St, Hobart TAS 7000, Australia at approximately 1 PM.
