Frequently asked questions

  • When is the best time to visit Peru?

Peru is a year-round destination, but the driest months (May–October) are ideal for visiting Machu Picchu and the Andes, with clear skies and mild daytime temperatures. November–April is warmer with occasional showers, making the Amazon lush and wildlife-rich.
  • Do I need a visa?

Most travellers from the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand don’t require a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date. If travelling with children, ensure they each have their own passport and carry a consent letter if only one parent is present.
  • What level of fitness is required?

This trip is graded easy to moderate. Activities involve walking on uneven terrain, steps at archaeological sites, and jungle paths, plus a gradual introduction to high altitude (up to approx. 3,800 m / 12,500 ft). A reasonable level of mobility and health is recommended.
  • How is altitude managed?

The itinerary is designed for gradual acclimatisation: starting at sea level in Lima, continuing to the Sacred Valley (lower than Cusco), then Cusco itself, before Lake Titicaca or the Amazon. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals/alcohol for the first two days in the Andes, and consult your doctor about preventative medication if needed.
  • Is the Amazon section suitable for everyone?

The lodge is reached via a 45-minute boat trip and offers guided walks, canoe outings, and night excursions. Activities are flexible and can be tailored to your comfort level. Families with children aged 8+ usually enjoy the jungle, but it’s less suited to very young children or those with mobility issues.
  • What meals are included?

Daily breakfasts are included, along with selected lunches and dinners. Expect fresh fruits, breads, cereals, and hot dishes each morning. Lunches range from Andean delicacies at a private hacienda to fine à la carte dining at Machu Picchu’s Sumaq Hotel. In the Amazon, full board is provided with Peruvian and international dishes prepared from local ingredients. Dinners in Lima and Cusco include contemporary cuisine, while free evenings allow you to explore local restaurants. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets can be accommodated with prior notice.
  • What is Peruvian food like?

Peru is renowned for its fusion of Andean, coastal, and international flavours. Try ceviche, quinoa salads, alpaca or chicken stews, tamales, fresh Amazonian fish, and sweet treats like suspiro limeño. The Amazon offers tropical fruits, river fish, and hearty stews. Spices are gentle, and many dishes can be adapted for children or those with allergies.
  • Are special diets catered for?

Yes. Please notify your requirements at booking so hotels, trains, and the Amazon lodge can prepare suitable options.
  • What accommodation can I expect?

Each hotel is chosen for character, comfort, and location: Hotel B, Lima – 5★ boutique art hotel in Barranco. Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba – 5★ eco-luxury lodge in the Sacred Valley. Sumaq Machu Picchu – 5★ riverside hotel with gourmet dining. Palacio del Inka, Cusco – 5★ colonial-style property beside the Coricancha temple. Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica – 4★ eco-lodge with thatched cabanas and full board. Atemporal Hotel, Lima – 4★ stylish townhouse for your final night.
  • Is there a luggage restriction for Machu Picchu and the Amazon?

Yes. The Vistadome train allows one small bag up to 8 kg / 17.6 lb. Your main luggage will be stored and delivered to Cusco. For the Amazon, you may take 10 kg / 22 lb on the boat; larger bags remain in Puerto Maldonado’s storage facility.
  • What transport is used?

Private vehicles for transfers and tours, the scenic Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, and a motorised canoe to the Amazon lodge. Flights between Lima, Cusco, and Puerto Maldonado are not included but can be arranged.
  • Will I have internet access?

Wi-Fi is available at all hotels in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. At Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, there is no Wi-Fi, allowing you to disconnect and enjoy nature.
  • How do tips work?

Tipping isn’t obligatory but is appreciated. We suggest approx. USD $5–10 per day for guides, USD $2–5 for drivers, and 10% in restaurants if service isn’t included.
  • What should I pack?

Comfortable clothing for warm days and cooler evenings. A warm layer and waterproof jacket for the Andes. Sturdy walking shoes/trainers. Light long sleeves and trousers for jungle walks (for sun and insect protection). Sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Refillable water bottle and small daypack. Camera, spare batteries, and travel adapter (Peru uses 220V, type A/B/C plugs).
  • What safety precautions should I take?

Peru is friendly and safe for visitors, but normal precautions apply: keep valuables in hotel safes, carry only essentials, and stay with your guide at remote sites. In the Amazon, follow instructions carefully and avoid wandering off trails alone.
  • What about travel insurance?

Comprehensive insurance is essential, covering medical care (including at altitude), cancellation, personal belongings, and activities such as jungle excursions or optional hikes.
