Itinerary
Day 1
Castles, Highlands & Outlander Landscapes
Edinburgh - South Queensferry - Doune - Callander - Glen Coe - Fort William - Loch Ness - Inverness. Arrive in Edinburgh before 08:30 AM and make your way to the designated meeting point. The tour will depart at approximately 9:00 AM. We begin the day at Midhope Castle, best known as Lallybroch in Outlander, the family home of Jamie Fraser. Though the interior is uninhabitable, the 15th-century exterior remains largely intact, making it a perfect stop for photos. From here, you will have the choice to see Blackness Castle, perched on the Firth of Forth and often called ‘the ship that never sailed’ due to its unique shape. Used in the series as Fort William, this formidable fortress has a long history as a royal residence, garrison, and prison. where you will have time to explore the castle and its grounds at your own pace.
Next, we travel to Doune Castle, instantly recognisable as Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan MacKenzie. With its towering gatehouse and remarkably preserved great hall, the castle also featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. You’ll have free time to enjoy lunch in Callander, a riverside town often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’. Here, you can also explore local teashops and enjoy the scenery before we journey further into the Highlands.
In the afternoon, we visit Glen Coe, a dramatic glen featured in the show’s opening credits. Its striking scenery offers a powerful sense of place, ideal for a short photo stop. The tour then continues past Fort William, where Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, looms above. This town also served as a key setting in Jamie’s story. We stop briefly at Loch Ness for a photo and the chance to spot its legendary monster before arriving in Inverness for the evening, where you are free to explore the historic town centre, its vibrant pubs, and riverside views.
Please note: Scottish weather is unpredictable, so bring suitable clothing for all conditions, a waterproof jacket, suitable walking shoes, sunglasses, and your cameras. Most places accept card payments, but we recommend bringing some cash as well. The Midhope Castle visit is subject to availability and is closed from December to May.
Meeting Point: Caffe Nero, 1 Parliament Sq, Royal Mile, EH1 1RE, besides St Giles Cathedral from 08:30 - 08:45 AM.
Day 2
Standing Stones, Battlefields & Historic Villages
Inverness - Clava - Newtonmore - Falkland - Culross - Edinburgh. Today, we will visit Clava Cairns, a remarkable prehistoric site dating back around 4,000 years. Here, you can walk among the ancient standing stones and burial chambers that inspired Craigh Na Dun in the Outlander series. You will have the opportunity to join an excursion to Culloden, the site of the brief but bloody 1746 battle that ended the Jacobite rising. As you explore the battlefield, a guide will share the powerful history behind this defining moment, bringing the story vividly to life.
We head south to the Highland Folk Museum, where you’ll have time for lunch and to explore the site, which depicts Highland life from the 1700s to the 1960s. With its authentic buildings and historical settings, it offers a valuable glimpse into the daily life that inspired much of Outlander. Set in the Cairngorms National Park, it also served as a filming location for several scenes in the series.
In the afternoon, we visit Falkland, which portrayed Inverness in the 1940s and 1960s scenes of the show. Fans will recognise the square where Jamie’s ghost watches Claire. The town, home to Falkland Palace, remains largely unchanged, making it ideal for period filming. Our final stop is Culross, the setting for Cranesmuir in the series. This well-preserved 17th-century village, once a thriving port, is now managed by the National Trust. You’ll have time to explore its cobbled streets before we return to Edinburgh, arriving around 6 PM.
Drop off Point: 1 Parliament Sq, Royal Mile, EH1 1RE, besides St Giles Cathedral, at approximately 6PM.
