Summary

There’s more to Cuba than sandy beaches and cigars. Beyond its beautiful coastlines and tobacco farms lies a place filled with more adventure than you can imagine. Dive into the ocean for incredible snorkelling, learn to whip up some of the finest mojitos from the local experts of Playa Larga, and find your rhythm as you salsa dance in the cradle of the Cuban Revolution. Whether you’re in it for the food or the fiestas, this 15-day venture will have all the ingredients needed to spice up your journey.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Havana

Arrive at any time. Tonight take the opportunity to connect with your fellow travellers. Seek out some live music and break the ice in one of the city's iconic hideouts while toasting with mojitos to the beginning of an amazing holiday.

  • Day 2

    Havana/Viñales

Viñales is in the Pinar del Rio province and located in a fertile valley surrounded by the unusual mogotes, or limestone pincushion hills. Arguably one of the prettiest natural areas in Cuba, we have many opportunities here to enjoy the area, whether it be hiking or simply sitting back and enjoying the view.

  • Day 3

    Viñales

Arguably one of the prettiest natural areas in Cuba, take the chance to explore the area, or simply sit back and enjoying the view.

  • Day 4

    Viñales/Playa Larga

Set off for laid-back Playa Larga, stopping along the way to enjoy beach time and snorkel in the Bay of Pigs. On arrival in Playa Larga, learn how to make a mojito from a local expert, and be sure to sample the goods!

  • Day 5

    Playa Larga/Remedios

Set off through the countryside to Santa Clara. Step into Cuban history, and visit the Che Guevara mausoleum and museum. Continue on to colonial Remedios, and soak up the culture in this town that is often overlooked.

  • Day 6

    Remedios/Bayamo

Setting off early, we head for Bayamo, the capital of Granma Province. It is the second of the seven towns founded in Cuba; nowadays it is a beautiful colonial town with a pleasant, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere. We'll make a stop in the city of Camaguey to break up the journey.

  • Day 7

    Bayamo/Baracoa

The area offers everything from beaches, to hiking opportunities and museums. The best way to get around the town, situated on the bay with mountains towering in the background, is on foot, and there is plenty of time to see it all. Wander the Malecon coastal path and visit the fort built to defend the city from pirates.

  • Day 8

    Baracoa

Take some time to visit the city then head further afield to the mountains or visit the striking black sand beaches. Playa Maguana and the smaller Playa Nava are both nearby and accessible by bike or taxi. Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt is approximately 40 km outside of town and well worth a visit.

  • Day 9

    Baracoa/Santiago de Cuba

Drive along the rugged coast towards Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of the Cuban revolution and home of son rhythms. Santiago has a vibrant traditional music scene that will entice even the shyest dancer out to experiment with some salsa moves.

  • Day 10

    Santiago de Cuba

Enjoy a free day in Santiago. Explore this Afro-Cuban city by visiting important revolutionary sites, like the Moncada Barracks.

  • Day 11

    Santiago de Cuba/Sierra Maestra

Transfer to Bayamo and take an orientation walk. This afternoon, travel to Sierra Maestra.

  • Day 12

    Sierra Maestra/Camagüey

Embark on a hike through the Sierra Maestra mountains in the footsteps of Che Guevarra and Fidel Castro and learn more about Cuba's history. Transfer west across the island to Camagüey.

  • Day 13

    Camagüey/Trinidad

This morning, take an orientation walk to Camagúey's markets and plazas. Later, travel to beautiful colonial Trinidad, and get a feel for the city's energy on an orientation walk. Enjoy an included salsa lesson, then try out some new moves on the town.

  • Day 14

    Trinidad

For outdoor enthusiasts, Trinidad is a haven for activities. If a beach is in the cards, try snorkelling or diving in nearby Playa Ancón. Enjoy a local meal together with one of the host families.

  • Day 15

    Trinidad/Havana

Return to the bustling capital, stopping off at Cienfuegos along the way.

  • Day 16

    Havana

    Depart at any time.

  • My Cuba trip was a wonderful experience. We spent 16 (admittedly, very hot) summer days filled with history, dance and community. Our guide Jorge-Luis and our driver Marcial did a great job - we got everywhere on time, somehow always avoided the crowds and learnt loads about the country. The busrides while long at times were either entertaining or allowed time to nap and relax. If you want to see an island that size in 16 days that?s just something you have to put up with. Life is difficult in Cuba at the moment, so don?t expect western standards. Be prepared to live spontaneously, enjoy the fresh fruit and tropical landscape and allow your horizons to expand a little. This trip humbled me, renewed my awareness of my own privilege and fortified my conviction that community and love is our most important tool in the face of adversity. Everything.

  • Really enjoyed the trip. Great was to see as much as Cuba as possible. The trip does have a lot of driving, meaning some places we didn't actually get to spent much time. There was only 4 on the tour, which I think is too small and I wouldn't like to do another G Adventures tour with such a small number. I feel I didn't get the proper group travel experience. I wouldn't recommend running the tour with that little people. Other group members felt the lack of cash in ATMs wasn't highlighted enough so they had very little cash and being such a small group I felt I missed out of different experiences. I would have liked an extra night in Trinadad as I felt it was one of the few places that has things to do but no time to do them. I think two nights in Santiago de Cuba is too long as there wasn't much to see or do. The risk of having such a small group again would make me nervous about booking another G Adventures tour. Makes it easy for solo travellers to visit any country hassle free. Having everything organised for you takes the hassle out of trying to find accommodation, transport, etc and makes for a stress free trip.
