Summary
Travel to Turkey to experience the rural culture of the Cappadocia region. A series of volcanic eruptions resulted in a landscape of porous rocks known as fairy chimneys – now the ideal hotspot for a balloon ride. The elements carved the terrain of Goreme, and later, the people discovered they too could carve the rocks into homes and churches. With a local guide who knows all the fantastic tales of old, discover Cappadocia's many legends from the Byzantine era on this Short Break adventure.
Itinerary
Day 1
Cappadocia
Merhaba! Welcome to Cappadocia. A central region in Turkey, Cappadocia is famous for the fairy chimneys that dot the landscape and the near-perfect weather. When you arrive, maybe soak in the horizon at sunrise, filled with floating hot air balloons. Visit rock-hewn churches, cave homes and incredible underground cities. Maybe walk through the village of Goreme and get the lay of the land. Your guided tours will begin tomorrow, so tonight is yours to enjoy!
Day 2
Cappadocia
After breakfast this morning, your local guide will meet you at 9 am to trek to the region’s heart. You’ll set out to explore one of the many valleys of Cappadocia – maybe Love Valley (whose phallic-shaped formations are great for a giggle) or Red Valley (within Goreme National Park, this valley is named after the red-hued landscape). Talk to your guide about how far and wide you would like to hike this morning. You’ll then enjoy free time for lunch in the village of Goreme – a valley town carved into volcanic rock, shaped by erosion. After lunch, end the day with a visit to the UNESCO Open Air Museum, with its many rock-cut churches and fascinating artworks from the Byzantine era. This evening is yours to explore – consider a visit to an ancient Caravanserai to watch the dance of the whirling dervishes (a Sema ceremony).
Day 3
Cappadocia
Today, you’ll head underground. After breakfast at your hotel, discover Kaymakli Underground City with your guide (only open to visitors since 1964) and walk through the subterranean corridors, tunnels and caves. From here, let your imagination run wild at Devrent Valley (also known as Imaginary Valley or Pink Valley), known for its whimsical rock formations. Make a stop at Pasabag Monks Valley and check out the three-headed fairy chimneys – the result of volcanic eruptions, wind and water. Tonight, enjoy a drop of wine from a local wine house or grab a bottle to go and watch the sunset over the mystic landscape.
Day 4
Cappadocia
With no further activities planned today, you can leave at any time after breakfast. Hotel check-out will be 11 am, so make sure you speak to your booking agent if you wish to stay longer.

Customer reviews & ratings
The tour guide, nice, informative, was a local from the area which was nice to gain insight as to how he and his family grew up. We really wanted to go on a hot-air balloon ride while in Cappadocia but when we contacted Intrepid months out, and then a week out from our trip, we were told to wait until we landed in the area, needless to say, the trips were getting full so we just went and booked on our own. When booking an airport transfer through Intrepid, the price was double of what all the other companies (GetYourGuide, Viator, etc.) were offering. The trip is marketed as a "four day" trip. Day 1 is traveling to the area (booked ourselves) and you don't even see your guide, so I don't consider that to be part of any tour. We were also led into a rug and pottery making place and then pressured to buy something multiple times after politely declining, multiple times. This was a waste of time that I would have rather been hiking in the area or walking around town. Majestic Cave Hotel was amazing, great location, great staff and food!
Darlene Apr, 2025 VerifiedI struck Gold in Cappadocia! I was fortunate enough to have Hasan the guide who is a local. He was knowledgeable, charming and insightful. The region is spectacular and I feel that the 2 day tour was very thorough. The Majestic Cave House is also a charming hotel in a perfect location for balloon spectating.
