Summary
Explore one of northern Spain's most popular destinations on this 5-day tour. Take in the highlights of Bilbao and its surroundings, including the UNESCO-listed Bizkaia Bridge, Butron Castle, and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The tour continues with a stop at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the fishing village of Bermeo, and Gernika, home to the Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika. In the French Basque Country, discover Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and San Sebastián, with panoramic views from Mount Igueldo. The Rioja wine region is explored with a tour of Laguardia, a traditional winery visit, and a sweet tasting in Vitoria, before returning to Bilbao.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Bilbao!
Upon arrival in Bilbao, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for check-in. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure, exploring the iconic Guggenheim Museum, wandering the charming Casco Viejo, or enjoying a scenic riverside walk along the Nervión River.
Please Note: This is a bi-lingual, large group coach tour, where a majority of travellers may be Spanish speaking. If this is the case, then English may be the second language. For groups of 12 or more the tour is escorted by a bilingual (Spanish & English speaking) tour leader/escort. They will provide explanations about the itinerary, coordinate accommodation services, and ensure the smooth running of the tour, making your trip an enjoyable experience. When the group size is less than 12, this service may be provided by the driver. There will be experienced bi-lingual local guides for included city sightseeing.
Please Also Note: During the stay in Bilbao, there will be no accompanying guide service. This combined tour may include participants with different destinations, and the accompanying guide may vary by tour segment.
Day 2
Explore Bilbao & Surroundings
Bilbao - Costa de Bizkaia - Bilbao. After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll set off to explore the Bilbao estuary, uncovering the city’s fascinating industrial past. Our first stop will be the iconic Bizkaia Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll then pass by the grand Butrón Castle on our way to the stunning Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
From a distance, we’ll catch a glimpse of the dramatic San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a site made famous by the TV series Game of Thrones. In Bermeo, a charming fishing village, we’ll have time to wander and soak in the local atmosphere, with a special pintxo tasting to savour the region’s culinary delights.
Our journey will then take us to Gernika, where we’ll visit the historic Casa de Juntas and stand beneath the famous Tree of Gernika. By around 2:30 PM, we’ll return to Bilbao, where we’ll have some free time for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a guided walking tour of Bilbao, taking in the highlights of the city centre, including its most important landmarks and the atmospheric old town.
Day 3
Day Trip to Biarritz & San Sebastián
Bilbao - Biarritz (France) - San Sebastian (Spain) - Bilbao. Today, we’ll cross into France to embark on a guided visit to Biarritz, a glamorous summer retreat for European royalty. As we explore, we’ll uncover the city’s most famous landmarks and enjoy some of the best views of the coastline.
Our next stop takes us to the charming coastal village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where we’ll stroll through its picturesque streets and savour a delicious local sweet.
Finally, we’ll arrive in San Sebastián, where we’ll enjoy a walking tour of the city, followed by some free time to explore at your leisure. Afterward, we’ll head to Mount Igueldo for spectacular panoramic views over the bay. We’ll then return to Bilbao, taking in the scenic beauty along the way.
Day 4
Rioja Wine Region & Vitoria
Bilbao - Vitoria - Bilbao. Today, we’ll enter the renowned Rioja wine region, where we’ll be treated to magnificent views of endless vineyards. As we pass through charming small towns, we’ll discover countless wineries, each with its unique character. Our first stop will be Laguardia, one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages in Rioja, where we’ll enjoy a walking tour of its historic centre.
Next, we’ll visit a traditional winery for a guided tour and wine tasting, allowing us to experience the region’s finest wines. After some free time to explore Laguardia at your own pace, we’ll head to Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country. There, we’ll embark on a panoramic tour, followed by a walking tour through the fascinating city centre and part of the historic district. A delightful tasting of a typical sweet from a high-quality Basque artisan chocolatier will be included. We’ll then return to Bilbao
Day 5
Departure from Bilbao
After breakfast, depending on your flight time, you may have some free time to enjoy the city before being transferred from the hotel to the airport for your onward flight.
