Summary
Explore Spain and Portugal on this 13-day adventure from Madrid, travelling through sun-drenched cities, historic towns and stunning landscapes. Explore Salamanca’s golden sandstone streets, taste port wine in Porto and stroll through Lisbon’s elegant Belém district. Cross back into Spain to uncover Andalusia’s charm in Seville, Córdoba and Granada, home to the legendary Alhambra. Continue on to Valencia’s coast and vibrant Barcelona before returning to Madrid via Zaragoza.
Itinerary
Day 1
Madrid to Salamanca & Porto
Madrid - Salamanca - Porto (Portugal). We leave Madrid from our bus terminal at 8:00, travelling towards Salamanca, one of Spain’s most beautiful and historic university cities. Founded in the 12th century, its prestigious university is among the oldest in Europe. You’ll have free time to wander through the charming old town and admire the magnificent Baroque architecture of the Plaza Mayor, the city’s lively central square.
In the afternoon, we continue across the border into Portugal and make our way to Porto, a city celebrated for its riverfront charm and world-famous port wine.
Please note: This tour is bi-lingual, and will be conducted in Spanish as well as in English.
Meeting Point: C. de Ferraz, 3, Moncloa - Aravaca, 28008 Madrid at 8:00.
Day 2
Exploring Porto
After breakfast, we set out on a panoramic sightseeing tour of Porto, a city recognised by UNESCO for its historic charm and architectural splendour. We visit key landmarks including the cathedral, the impressive Stock Exchange building, and the richly decorated Church of Santa Clara. The tour concludes with a visit to a traditional wine cellar, where we enjoy a tasting of the city’s celebrated Port wine.
The remainder of the day is free for you to explore at your own pace - perhaps stroll along the Ribeira waterfront or relax in one of Porto’s inviting cafés.
Day 3
Coimbra, Fatima & Lisbon
Porto - Coimbra - Fatima - Lisbon. Today, we depart for Coimbra, a historic riverside city known for its prestigious university, one of the oldest in Europe. You’ll have free time to explore the charming old town or visit the university’s hilltop campus.
We then continue to Fátima, one of the world’s most significant pilgrimage sites. Enjoy free time to visit the Basilica and the Sanctuary, where millions of pilgrims gather each year in devotion.
Later, we travel onward to Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital. In the evening, you may wish to experience a traditional fado performance, an unforgettable expression of Portuguese culture.
Day 4
Exploring Lisbon
This morning, we enjoy a panoramic tour of Lisbon, a beautiful city set at the mouth of the Tagus River. Our sightseeing includes the Park Viewpoint, Edward VII Square, Rossio Square, and the elegant Liberdade Avenue. We then visit the Madragoa district, the birthplace of fado - Portugal’s hauntingly beautiful traditional music.
The tour continues to the Belém district, where we see three of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks: the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, and the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture.
The afternoon is free for you to explore the city at your own pace. Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril, three of Portugal’s most charming coastal towns.
Day 5
Merida & Seville
Lisbon - Merida (Spain) - Seville. We depart Lisbon this morning and cross the Spanish border to reach Mérida, a city rich in Roman history. Enjoy free time to explore its remarkable archaeological complex, including the UNESCO-listed Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre.
In the afternoon, we continue our journey along the historic Autovía de la Plata through the heart of Spain towards Andalucía. We arrive in Seville, where dinner is included.
Day 6
Exploring Seville
Today, we begin with a city tour of Seville, visiting María Luisa Park, Plaza de España, the exterior of the magnificent Cathedral and its Giralda Tower, and the charming Barrio de Santa Cruz, once the Jewish quarter.
You’ll have the option to take a cruise on the Guadalquivir River for panoramic views of the Gold Tower and Expo 92, or explore the Maestranza bullring. In the evening, you may choose to attend a flamenco show.
Day 7
Seville to Cordoba
Seville - Cordoba. Enjoy breakfast this morning before we depart for Córdoba. Once we have arrived, we'll begin our walking tour at the Almodóvar Gate, a historic Moorish gateway leading into the old town, before exploring the narrow, whitewashed streets of the Jewish Quarter, including the 14th-century Synagogue.
We’ll then visit the renowned Mosque-Cathedral, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture with its striking horseshoe arches and later Christian additions. The afternoon is free for leisure activities. Later, we will make our way to our accommodation, where we will enjoy dinner.
Day 8
White Villages, Ronda & Costa del Sol
Cordoba - Ronda - Costa del Sol. After breakfast, we depart for the Route of the White Villages and Ronda. Admire the striking hilltop villages with whitewashed houses, set against rugged landscapes, and enjoy some free time to explore Ronda, famous for its dramatic El Tajo gorge and the historic Puente Nuevo bridge.
We then continue on to Costa del Sol, where we will make our way to our accommodation and have dinner. Please note that whilst we usually stay in Torremolinos, this is subject to change.
Day 9
Granada & Alhambra
Costa del Sol - Granada. Today, we depart for Granada. Here, we will explore the stunning Alhambra and Generalife, the former residence of the Moorish kings, renowned for its magnificent fountains, gardens, and arches. This tour includes visits to the Palace of Carlos V, the Archaeological Museum, the Church of Santa María de la Alhambra, the Royal Chapel, a stroll through the Alcaicería, the historic silk market, and Cathedral Square.
This evening, there is an optional visit to the Sacromonte caves to experience a traditional gipsy flamenco show.
Please note: If tickets to the Alhambra and Generalife are unavailable on specific dates as provided by The Patronato, an alternative tour of Granada will be arranged.
Day 10
Granada to Valencia
Granada - Valencia. Start the day with breakfast before we journey through the varied landscapes of Andalusia and Murcia, passing the cave dwellings of Guadix, the historic town of Baza, and the mountain pass of Puerto Lumbreras.
We then follow the Mediterranean coastline towards Valencia. After we've checked in to the hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to explore this coastal city.
Day 11
Valencia to Barcelona
Valencia - Barcelona. Enjoy some free time in the morning to explore Valencia before we depart for Barcelona. On arrival, enjoy some leisure time, perhaps to wander down Las Ramblas or visit the magnificent Sagrada Familia.
Please note: On some departures, the guided sightseeing of day 12 may take place on this day instead, for logistical reasons.
Day 12
Exploring Barcelona
This morning, we set out on a city sightseeing tour of Barcelona, one of Europe’s most dynamic and artistic cities. We visit Montjuïc Park, offering sweeping views over the harbour and city, as well as the Olympic Ring, the monument to Christopher Columbus, and the atmospheric Gothic Quarter, where narrow medieval streets reveal the city’s historic heart.
The afternoon is free for you to explore at your own pace - perhaps visit one of Gaudí’s masterpieces or relax along Las Ramblas. In the evening, an optional night tour is available, showcasing Barcelona’s grand boulevards, illuminated buildings, and dazzling fountains.
Day 13
Zaragoza & Madrid
Barcelona - Zaragoza - Madrid. We depart, travelling through Lerida and Zaragoza with some free time along the way, before continuing to Madrid, where our journey concludes. You will be dropped off on Ferraz Street, near the Plaza de Espana, at approximately 17:30, though this time is subject to external factors such as traffic and passenger delays.
