Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Tokyo Arrival & Sushi-Making Fun

Welcome to Tokyo! You’ll meet your group in the afternoon for a quick intro and trip briefing from your Adventure Leader, who’ll give you the lowdown on what to expect over the next five days, plus some helpful tips for navigating local culture like a pro. Then it’s straight into your first hands-on experience: a sushi-making class! Roll up your sleeves, learn the art of sushi from local experts and then feast on your own creations for dinner. It’s the perfect way to bond with your new travel crew. Then it’s time to take in the city from above with a visit to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, where you’ll catch incredible panoramic views of the Tokyo skyline. After those jaw-dropping views, keep the good vibes going with the option to hit up a local bar with your group.

  • Day 2

    Markets, Temples & Akihabara

We’ll start the morning with a visit to the Tsukiji Outer Market, the iconic district that’s renowned as one of the best places to try sushi thanks to their deliveries of fresh fish. Explore the stalls, and treat yourself to some sashimi along the way!
Next, we’re heading to the Asakusa district, where we’ll visit the iconic Sensoji Temple. This historic Buddhist temple is known for its vibrant, bustling atmosphere and traditional Nakamise-dori street. If you’re still hungry, be sure to grab a couple of local snacks! You’ve then got some time to explore Asakusa under your own steam:

    • If you’d like, you can opt to join us for an amazing Sumo experience. This is a rare opportunity where you can meet ex-Sumo wrestlers, and enjoy a traditional chanko nabe lunch.
    • You might want to grab another view of Tokyo from the Tokyo SKYTREE® tower, where you’ll get amazing panoramas all over the city.
    • For a very different look at the city, why not opt to take a cruise down the Sumida River?
    • For a fascinating glimpse into Japanese history, pay a visit to the Samurai Museum.
    •
    • After meeting back up with your group, you’ll head to Akihabara – Japan’s ‘Electric Town’. It’s a bustling district, renowned for its vibrant stores and arcades, and is a haven for anime and manga lovers. While you’re here, you can opt to get a picture-perfect experience with a visit to one of the district’s famous maid cafés.
The rest of the day is then yours to explore Tokyo as you wish. If you’re a shopping fan, head to Ginza, where yo’ll find boutiques and luxury brands galore. If you’re looking for a bit of action, you can choose to visit a staple of Japanese culture – the batting cages! Or, if you’d prefer to relax, why not take a visit to a Japanese bathhouse?
  • Day 3

    Shrines & Shibuya

We’re starting the day with a visit to one of Tokyo’s most iconic spots – the Meiji Shrine. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji, who played a major role in modernising Japan, this peaceful oasis is a beautiful escape from the city buzz. Next, we’re venturing to the heart of Harajuku, Tokyo’s ultimate fashion hub where anything goes! Expect to see punks, goths, technicolour hair and everything in between. We’ll explore the bustling streets, checking out quirky vintage shops like Chicago and grabbing a bite at one of the area’s iconic restaurants. From there, it’s on to the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing – Shibuya Crossing! It’s an absolute must-see, with thousands of people crossing through the iconic intersection at once. The afternoon is yours to explore! Here are a few ideas to make the most of your time: Why not try Kartoon Karting? Zoom through the streets of Tokyo in a go-kart for a truly thrilling experience. Visit teamLab Planets and immerse yourself in this mind-blowing art gallery, where digital meets nature in spectacular ways. Check out Imperial Palace Gardens and take a slow stroll through these beautiful, historic grounds – home to Japan’s Emperor.

  • Day 4

    Fujikawaguchiko & Mount Fuji Views

Today, we’re up bright and early to take you on an incredible day trip out to Fujikawaguchiko, putting you within a stone’s throw of the majestic Mount Fuji. On your trip, you’ll explore this amazing area, including:

    • A visit to Arakurayama Sengen Park, a serene and picturesque shrine nestled in the foothills of Fuji.
    • A short hike to Tenku no Torii (the Torii Gate by the Sky), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Fuji on clear days. This iconic gate offers a perfect spot for photos with the mountain as your backdrop.
    • A hike to Haha no Shirataki (Mother White’s Waterfall). This charming spot offers even more glimpses of Fuji, so spend some time exploring this beautiful natural location. After an unforgettable day, we’ll head back to Tokyo for your final night. Whether you’re up for drinks with the group or a chill evening, it’s your last chance to soak up the city vibes!

Frequently asked questions

  • Where does the trip start and finish?

Your entire adventure takes place in Tokyo, giving you the chance to explore the city’s must-see highlights – all in just 5 days. All local transport is included (excluding airport transfers), so you can focus on the fun without worrying about the logistics.
  • What is the accommodation used on this tour?

On this adventure tour, you’ll be based in a hostel. All of the hostels we use are clean, comfortable, and well-located. In them, you’ll have all bedding provided for you, so no need to bring anything extra! The most commonly used hostel on this tour is Imano Tokyo Hostel. Please note that while gender-specific dorm rooms are available in some destinations, there is a chance that your hostel accommodation will be mixed dorms.
  • What is the general demographic of travellers on this tour?

While we get a huge range of people on this tour, we tend to see that this tour is most popular with people in their early-20s to mid-30s.
  • What is the standard of accommodation?

On our standard backpacking tours, all of the hostels are clean, air-conditioned or have fans, are safe, have good showers, internet, washing machines and most importantly, have real Japanese character. If you would like to stay in a private room though, that is absolutely possible as well as we have room upgrades available at the time of purchase. Please note that while gender-specific dorm rooms are available in some destinations, there is a chance that your hostel accommodation will be mixed dorms.
  • Do the hostels have Wi-Fi? Will I be able to keep in touch with friends and family while in Japan?

There is Wi-Fi available in all hostels. You can also purchase a Japanese SIM card to stay in touch, and your Adventure Leader can help you with this. Alternatively, you can look into using an eSim provider such as Holafly.
  • Who looks after our bags when we’re on transport and/or day excursions?

The bags will be stored at the hostels where they are tagged and recorded. We have never had a case of anyone losing their luggage or having their luggage stolen so you can focus on having fun.
  • What kind of restaurants will we go to?

Your Adventure Leader will always offer to take you for a group meal, where we go to a local restaurant, which we know is hygienic and has cheap and delicious food. If you are craving Western food, then there are lots of great options!
  • I’m a vegetarian/have allergies – will I be able to get the right food?

Yes! With so many food choices, Japan can meet the needs of individuals with special dietary needs or requests. Just tell your Adventure Leader and they can help you find something suitable. You will probably discover a new dish that you love! However, please note that if you follow a vegan diet, you will not be able to eat the Sumo Lunch.
  • What travel insurance do I need for Japan?

We require all our customers to have backpackers travel insurance when coming on the trip. We recommend purchasing a travel insurance that offers ‘Bad Weather or Natural Disaster Coverage’.
  • Do I need any special vaccinations for Japan?

No vaccinations are required to enter Japan. Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in Japan.
  • I have a medical condition – is this OK?

Generally yes, but please do inform us of your specific requirements at the point of booking. Please note that many common medications and over-the-counter drugs are illegal in Japan. If you have a prescription, you may want to check the rules regarding bringing it into Japan before you travel. You may need to obtain a Yakkan Shomei, a type of import certificate, in advance and show the certificate alongside your prescription medicines at customs.
  • If something happens, will I be able to get necessary medical attention?

Yes, Japan has modern, well equipped hospitals that are never very far away!
  • How do I get money in Japan?

ATMs are plentiful and you can withdraw money in all the places that we visit. We advise that you notify your bank that you will be travelling before you depart. As a note, many banks and cards do charge a foreign transaction fee when withdrawing money while abroad.
  • How much should I budget for food and drink on the Dragon Trip?

It really varies depending on your taste and budget. You can get a simple meal such as a bowl of ramen for £2 or go for high class sushi. Generally, we take travellers to affordable restaurants and recommend budgeting £15-20 a day for food and drink.
