Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Tokyo Arrival & Sushi-Making Fun

Welcome to Tokyo! Get ready to kick off your epic adventure as you meet your Adventure Leader and fellow travelers at the hostel. After a fun intro and trip briefing, you’ll dive headfirst into Japanese culture with a sushi-making class! Learn from a master chef and roll your way to deliciousness as you create your own sushi dinner.

As night falls, prepare to be wowed by Tokyo’s sparkling skyline from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

Feeling social? Head to a local bar for drinks and laughs with your new friends. First drink's on us, but remember: the drinking age in Japan is 20. Cheers!

  • Day 2

    Markets, Temples & Akihabara culture

Start your morning off right with a visit to the bustling Tsukiji Outer Market, where you can sample some of the freshest sashimi Tokyo has to offer. It’s a sushi lover’s dream!
Next, step back in time as you explore the historic Sensō-Ji Temple in Asakusa. Wander Nakamise-dori, a street packed with tasty local snacks and souvenirs. Feeling adventurous? Grab a street snack or two – you won’t regret it!

In the afternoon, you’ve got options: get up close with sumo wrestlers at lunch, float along the Sumida River on a scenic cruise, or take in jaw-dropping views from Tokyo Skytree. It’s your time to explore!

Later, regroup and dive into Akihabara, Tokyo’s neon-lit mecca for anime, electronics, and all things quirky. And for something totally out there, try a “Maid in Tokyo” café, where waitresses in costumes serve with a side of cuteness.
The evening is yours to explore the city’s nightlife or hit up the shops in Ginza. Whatever you choose, Tokyo’s energy will keep you buzzing!

  • Day 3

    Shrines, Style & Shibuya

This morning, step into the peaceful oasis of Meiji Shrine, a tranquil spot dedicated to Emperor Meiji. Soak in the calm vibes before heading to Tokyo’s trendiest fashion district – Harajuku! Here, the streets are alive with bold fashion, quirky shops, and endless inspiration. Grab some lunch and embrace your inner fashionista!
After lunch, we’re off to the world-famous Shibuya Crossing – time to experience that iconic Tokyo hustle! Don’t forget to snap a selfie with the adorable Hachiko Statue before you head off on your own mini adventure.

  • Day 6

Hakone’s Pirate Ships, Ropeway & Onsen Experience

Once we arrive, lace up your hiking boots and explore the Old Tokaido Trail. After working up an appetite, enjoy lunch near Moto-Hakone before setting sail on… a pirate ship! That’s right – you’ll be cruising across the stunning waters of Lake Ashi aboard a pirate ship, with Mount Fuji looming in the background on clear days.

Afterwards, soar over Hakone on the Ropeway to Owakudani, an active volcanic zone famous for its black eggs, rumored to add seven years to your life.

Cap off your day by unwinding in a traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring). Soak in the steamy, sulfuric waters and let all your worries melt away! This onsen will also acommodate you if you have tattoos.

  • Day 7

  • Day 8

Temples, Torii Gates & Historic Gion Region

Kick off your morning with a peaceful visit to Higashi Hongan-ji, one of the largest wooden structures in the world. It’s a perfect spot to beat the crowds and soak in some quiet moments.

Next, we’re off to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain. You can either take on the hike to the top for stunning views or stay closer to the base and enjoy the local street food.

After lunch, we’ll visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage site with sweeping views of Kyoto.
End the day with a stroll through the magical Gion district, known for its traditional tea houses and geisha culture. You’ll have free time to explore this charming area – maybe catch a performance or grab dinner in one of Gion’s quaint restaurants.

  • The organization was very good and the tour guide was very good. He took care of everything, was always available for us and gave a lot of recommendations at each location and also helped us with transportation at any time. My only criticism of the trip is the division of the days: one day too long in Tokyo, but too little time in Osaka and the free day in Kyoto could also be changed and instead one more day somewhere else. Highlights of the tour were the guesthouse in Hakone incl. host, karaoke (should be included) and the time in the anime district of Tokyo (possibly also offered in the evening).

Essential trip information

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much should I budget for food and drink?

It really varies depending on your taste and budget. You can get a simple meal such as a bowl of ramen for £2 or go for high class sushi. Generally, we take travellers to affordable restaurants and recommend budgeting £15-20 a day for food and drink.
  • Can I go into the Onsen with tattoos?

The Ryokan we stay at is familiar with international travellers so they understand it is common for international travellers to have tattoos. However, we would recommend covering it if it is a small one. You may also need to check with the Adventure Leader to see if it is fine. If it is not okay, you have the option to pay extra to hire a private onsen instead.
  • What's included?

Western and Japanese (english-speaking!) adventure leaders. Free Japanese tuition for beginners Accommodation in hostels and hotels which meet our high standards. All have their own unique Japanese charm, and at the same time are safe, clean, and hygienic. All train, boat and bus tickets. All taxes and charges.
  • What about visas?

They’re normally available upon arrival for over 60 countries including the UK, US, Canada Australia and EU countries. Please do check this with your local embassy.
  • Do I need to bring power converters?

The voltage in Japan is 100 Volts, which is different from North America (120V), Central Europe (230V) and most other places. Japanese electrical plugs have two, non-polarized pins. They fit into North American outlets. Japanese power outlets are identical to (2-pin) North American outlets. While most Japanese outlets these days are polarized (as in one slot is slightly wider than the other), you can find non-polarized outlets in some places.
  • Do I need a sleeping bag or is linen supplied in the hostels?

    All bedding is provided.
  • Who looks after our bags when we’re on transport and/or day excursions?

The bags will be stored at the hostels where they are tagged and recorded. On a couple of occasions, they will be stored at storage facilities in railway stations.
  • What should I pack for my trip?

We strongly recommend packing very light for trip. You can wash your clothes at most places we stay or pick up some supplies in the plentiful Japanese shops.
  • Suitcase or backpack?

Suitcase is OK, but a backpack/hold-all is much more convenient.
  • Will my phone work?

Your non-Japanese phone is unlikely to work but it’s possible to buy a SIM out there or use wifi for internet.
  • What kind of restaurants will we go to?

Your Adventure Leader will always offer to take you for a group meal, where we go to a local restaurant, which we know is hygienic and has cheap and delicious food. If you are craving Western food, then there are lots of great options!
  • I’m a vegetarian/have allergies – will I be able to get the right food?

Yes! With so many food choices, Japan can meet the needs of individuals with special dietary needs or requests. Just tell your Adventure Leader and they can help you find something suitable. You will probably discover a new dish that you love!
