If you’re an explorer in need of a destination unlike any other, you’d best be looking at Taiwan. From the bustling Taipei to the peaceful Sun Moon Lake, our 12-day Taiwan group tour takes you across the island in search of incredible destinations, historic cities, and spectacular scenery. Whether you’re getting to grips with traditional Taiwanese culture in Leshui, or exploring the dramatic Taroko National Park, there’s a side of Taiwan that’s bound to surprise and delight you. Good food, welcoming locals, and incredible sights – it’s all waiting for you in Taiwan.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Welcome to Taiwan!

Today marks the start of your Taiwan Adventure Tour, and around lunchtime you’ll meet up with your group and Adventure Leader to learn more about what the next 12 days have in store. Alongside learning more about the tour, your Adventure Leader will provide you with tips on adjusting to local life and some best practices for staying safe while travelling.

After this, we’ll whisk you off to your first unmissable activity – a spectacular hike up Elephant Mountain! We’ll jump on the MRT (the metro) to head there, and after a couple of hours spent taking in the incredible cityscape from the 184m peak, we’ll then head back down into the city. One thing you won’t want to miss in Taiwan is the food, and you’ll get your first glimpse of it on a food tour in a local night market. Whether you’re a fan of sweet or savoury, you’re bound to find your new favourite dish here!

If you’ve got some energy left on your first day, this evening you can opt to join your group at a local pub where you can ring in the start of your adventure in style.

  • Day 2

    Taipei

This morning, we’ll take you on a tour of this remarkable city, where your Adventure Leader will show you all the most impressive highlights. Among these, you’ll visit the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, and the Longshan Temple.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore as you see fit. Whether you’re going in search of more food, museums, or tourist attractions, take the afternoon to explore under your own steam. If you’d like, you might opt to head out to Beitou Hot Springs. Accessible by metro, this lush valley is home to a vast array of flora and fauna, a museum, and the chance to partake in a unique Taiwanese tradition.

  • Day 3

    Taipei to Yilan

We’re checking out early today, bound for our next destination – Yilan! We’ll spend the full day getting there, but along the way we’ll make a truly amazing stop at Leshui Village for an Indigenous life experience. Meet the local Indigenous communities here, where they’ll introduce you to Aboriginal tribal totems, their ‘Atayal gaga’ (belief system), and the ancestors of the rainbow. You’ll also learn about the Atayal way of life from our hosts, before we continue on our journey to Yilan.

Once we’ve arrived here, your evening is free to spend as you’d like. You can either hang out in the hostel after a day spent on the road, or head out into Yilan to see the sites.

  • Day 4

    Yilan to Hualien

You’re up before the dawn chorus today, but it’s in service of a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. We’ll head down to the beach and out onto the Pacific Ocean, where you’ll take to canoes and explore the area as the sun rises over the horizon.

After breakfast, we’re off to our next stop – Hualien. We’ll grab the train, taking a couple of hours and arriving after lunch. Once we’re checked in and settled, you can opt to join us on another amazing marine experience and head out to go whale-watching just off the coast of Hualien.

Back in the city, you can opt to spend the evening as you see fit. For local food specialties, try Hualien Yam, Hualien Taro, or bamboo rice!

  • Day 5

    Taroko National Park

Hualien is known as the gateway to the Taroko National Park, so it’s only fitting that we take you out on a full day excursion to explore one of the most stunning natural areas it’s possible to find.

On our trip, we’ll hike throughout the park, where you’ll also get the chance to explore waterfalls, such as the Baiyang Waterfall, as well as the dramatic drops and valleys of the Taroko Gorge.

We’ll arrive back in Hualien in the late afternoon, where you’ll have time to spend at your own leisure.

  • Day 6

    Hualien to Kaohsiung

We’re off to the next spot on our tour today – Kaohsiung. It’ll take us a few hours by train, but as we travel down the south coast of the country, get ready for some seriously impressive views.

Once we’ve arrived and checked in, and you’ve grabbed yourself some lunch, we’ll take you to visit the Fo Guang Shan Monastery. Known as the center of Buddhism in Taiwan, this incredible site now houses a museum, thousands of holy statues, and the 40m high Big Buddha statue.

We’ll then head back to Kaohsiung’s downtown area, where you’ve got the evening to explore the area and grab yourself a local delicacy for dinner.

  • Day 7

    Kaohsiung to Tainan

This morning, we’ll take you out and about for a morning exploring the city. Along the way, your Adventure Leader will show you the city’s highlights, including the Pier 2 Art Center, which hosts several art exhibitions inside old storage warehouses. You’ll also find the most photogenic temple in the entire country here – the Sanfeng Temple. With beautiful traditional architecture and a 300-year history, it’s a truly remarkable place to explore.

Later that day, we’ll hop back on the train to Tainan – on the high-speed rail, it’s under an hour to our next stop. Once we’re checked in and settled, head to Shennong Street this evening, where you’ll get a glimpse of the city’s bustling vibe.

  • Day 8

    Tainan

It’s time to explore Tainan, so your group will join your Adventure Leader this morning for a half-day tour of the city. Tainan is home to over 100 religious sites and a sprawling history – including one of the largest trading ports in the region at Anping Old Fort. Dating back to the 1600s, this complex is just one of the places you’ll explore today.

Once you’ve got yourself acquainted with the city, you’ve then got a free afternoon and evening to take a look around under your own steam. We’d recommend visiting the Tainan night market, where you’ll be able to try out local specialties including eel noodles, steamed sticky rice, and milkfish.

  • Day 9

    Sun Moon Lake

No trip to Taiwan is complete without a visit to the truly stunning Sun Moon Lake, so this morning we’re whizzing you off by private coach to explore the scenic area.

After the long journey, it’s time to stretch your legs and hop on electric bikes – you’ll cycle the 32km route around the lake with your Adventure Leader, where along the way you’ll see the stunning alpine lake, the surrounding Central Mountain Ranges, the Wenwu Temple, and the Ci’en Pagoda.

We’ll check into the hostel this evening, where you can then spend the evening as you wish. If 32km isn’t quite enough for you, you might head back out into the local area to do some more exploring!

  • Day 10

    Sun Moon Lake

In the local area surrounding the lake, you’ll find verdant tea plantations scattered across the landscape. This morning, we’ll take you to one of them! After a guided tour of the tea plantation with the staff here, you’ll then join a workshop where you’ll learn to create your own tea. You can even choose your own flavours!

This afternoon is free for you to explore the lakeside at your leisure. If you’re wanting a view from up high, you can opt to take the ropeway over the area – but if you’re determined to get back out on the water, why not rent a kayak for a day spent exploring the lake in the best way possible? If you’d rather spend your day relaxing, you might also head to one of the lake’s many spas for an afternoon getting some much-needed rest and relaxation.

  • Day 11

    Sun Moon Lake to Taipei

This morning, we’ll head back to Taipei by bus, arriving in the early afternoon.

There’s no way for you to visit Taipei without stopping by Taipei 101 – the vast skyscraper known the world over. So as a final unmissable activity, we’ll take you up to the observatory this evening, where you’ll get a truly stunning view across the city.

We’ll then take you out for a farewell dinner, where you and your group will see off your adventure in style – by sampling the famous Din Tai Fung dumpling soup.

  • Day 12

    Farewell

Today marks the end of your Taiwan Adventure Tour, so you’ll bid adieu to your group and Adventure Leader as you prepare to head your separate ways.

However, if you just can’t get enough of Taiwan, we might be able to tempt you with one last optional extra… a day tour to Yehliu, Jiufen and Pingxi! (Let us know when you book your trip if you’d like to join this tour.)

Essential trip information

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where does the trip start and finish?

This tour starts and ends in Taipei. Throughout, all your local travel is included, excluding airport transfers.
  • When do the trips depart? Can I begin my trip on a non-listed date?

You can find all of our set departure dates on the calendar at the top of the page. You can join a trip at any point – if you need to discuss a situation like this, such as joining a tour late, please let us know.
  • What is the accommodation used on this tour?

On this adventure tour, you’ll be based in hostels. All of the hostels & hotels we use are clean, comfortable, and well-located. In them, you’ll have all bedding provided for you, so no need to bring anything extra!
  • What is the general demographic of travellers on this tour?

While we get a huge range of people on our tours, we tend to see that our adventure tour is most popular with people in their mid-20s to late 30s.
  • What is the standard of accommodation?

The standard accommodation on our Taiwan tour is dorm rooms in hostels, but these do vary. All of the accommodation we use is clean, air-conditioned or has fans, and is very safe. Other people who stay at hostels are usually young people, aged 18 to 35, who are travelling on a smaller budget than people staying at hotels might ordinarily have. Because of this, it’s easy to make friends and fun to hang out in communal areas. If you would like to stay in a private room, that is absolutely possible as long as we have room upgrades available at the time of purchase.
  • Do the hostels have Wi-Fi? Will I be able to keep in touch with friends and family while in Taiwan?

There is Wi-Fi available for use in all hostels you stay in during The Dragon Trip. We also recommend you purchase a SIM card before leaving the airport to stay in touch, or opt to buy an eSim ahead of your travels.
  • Do I need to bring power converters?

Taiwanese electrical outlets are 110V and take plug types A and B – the same as the USA, Canada, and Japan. If you don’t have these plug types at home, you’ll need to bring an adaptor when travelling.
  • Who looks after our bags when we’re on transport and/or day excursions?

Your bags will be stored at the hostels where they are tagged and recorded. We have never had a case of anyone losing their luggage or having their luggage stolen - so you can focus on having fun.
  • What kind of restaurants will we go to?

On our tours, there’s plenty of freedom for you to enjoy as much as you want from the local food scene, meaning you can make the decisions that suit you at mealtimes. We believe that food is an important part of a country’s culture, so we’d always recommend eating as widely as you can while you’re away. In Taiwan, our adventure tour’s welcome dinner will take part during a night market food tour, where your Adventure Leader will point out all the amazing dishes you can try. For our farewell dinner, we’ll try famous ‘din tai fung’ soup noodles.
  • I’m a vegetarian/have allergies – will I be able to get the right food?

Yes, but we’ll always ask you to make us aware of these in advance. Our Adventure Leader will help you to cater to your needs, but you’ll also have plenty of freedom on the trip to try other things. We’d also recommend downloading apps like HappyCow, which will help you find local establishments that cater to any dietary requirements.
  • What travel insurance do I need for Taiwan?

We require all our customers to have travel insurance when coming on the trip. We recommend purchasing a travel insurance that offers ‘Bad Weather or Natural Disaster Coverage’. Please bring details of your travel insurance along with you. In the event of an accident, we may need to contact your insurance company on your behalf, so we will need the insurance company’s name and phone number and your policy number. When it comes to who to choose, we’re big fans of World Nomads as a travel insurance provider.
  • Do I need any special vaccinations for Taiwan?

The Dragon Trip aims to enter no areas with tropical diseases. However, as with any backpacking trip, we urge you to seek advice from a travel nurse before departing your home country. All travellers should be up to date with a full course of vaccination and boosters recommended by their governments. We recommend you have Hepatitis A, B, Tetanus, Japanese Encephalitis, and MMR.
  • I’m not very physically fit – is the trip suitable for me?

At its heart, the Dragon Trip is an adventure tour of Taiwan, but you can make your Dragon Trip as physically active (or inactive) as you want. If there is an activity you’d like to give a miss, you could ask your Adventure Leader for a more relaxing activity! We always ask our travellers to, as a baseline, expect a lot of walking.
  • How can I get money in Taiwan?

You can exchange Taiwan Dollars (TWD) at ATMs and bank counters in Taiwan’s airports - just make sure that your debit card has a foreign currency account and is enabled for foreign withdrawals. Bringing a few internationally accepted credit cards is also recommended, as they are widely usable in Taiwan.
  • How much should I budget for food and drink on the Dragon Trip?

Here are some average prices for meals and drinks which should give you a rough idea of how expensive food and drink is in Taiwan: - Local breakfast: USD 4–6.5 - Taiwanese meal box: USD 5 - Small to medium restaurants (no special decor): USD 5.5–12 - Larger restaurants (with decor): USD 10–25 - Chain restaurants: USD 25–67 - Night market stalls: USD 3.5–5 - Bar cocktails: USD 12–20 In the major metropolitan areas (Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung), it’s advisable to budget an additional USD 5–7 for the above items – city prices, after all!
  • Do I need to tip in Taiwan?

There is a certain amount of tipping culture in Taiwan. Here are some suggestions: - For restaurants, a service fee is usually included in the bill, so no extra tip is needed. - For taxis and general vendors, tipping is not expected. - For service-oriented and labor-intensive roles, such as: - Tour guides: A suggested tip of USD 5 per day (about TWD 150). - Housekeepers: A recommended tip of USD 3.5 per bed/day (about TWD 100).
  • Do I need a visa to visit Taiwan?

Nationals of most countries are eligible for the visa exemption program, which permits a duration of stay of 30-90 days. Before arriving in Taiwan, please complete an online immigration arrival card on the website of the National Immigration Agency
