What is ATOL?

ATOL stands for Air Travel Organisers License and is a requirement for anyone selling flights plus other elements. ATOL is also a financial protection scheme for customer in the event of insolvency.

How does it work for customers?

When you make a booking of a flight plus a tour or other element you'll receive an ATOL certificate along with your other documents such as booking confirmation.

In the event of insolvency of The Adventure People (very unlikely) your money is protected. If you're yet to travel you can get a full refund or still go away. If you're already away you'd still be repatriated and able to get home.

Although ATOL is UK legislation anyone booking with The Adventure People is protected because you're contracting with a UK registered company and so we extend our protection to everyone who books with us.

I am not from the UK and I don't live in the UK, does this still apply?

Yes. You'd be covered with the same protection as everyone else. Although this is UK legislation intended for UK residents, we extend globally.

In what situation would I need my ATOL certificate?

If having made your booking and The Adventure People sadly enters administration or becomes insolvent then your ATOL certificate is your proof that you can either get a refund or go on holiday.

If you're already overseas then your ATOL certificate is your proof that you'll be repatriated at no extra cost.

In any situation when ATOL protection kicks in the CAA will be coordinating and in touch with you directly.

Suppose I don't get a certificate?

If you're booking any item which does not include a flight you will not receive an ATOL certificate. ATOL certificates are only issued when the booking includes a flight and other element.

ATOL certificates are emailed at the time you make your booking. 

If your booking includes a flight and other elements and you have not received your ATOL certificate please check your spam or junk folders. If you're booking at our offices we will print an ATOL certificate for you or immediately email you.

Should I book with a company that does't offer ATOL?

We can't answer that! What we can say is that if you make your booking with a company which has an ATOL license then you're assured of further financial protection which ultimately means you either go on your adventure and have a great time or you get all of your money back. There are no grey areas! If your booking company doesn't have an ATOL license then there may be grey areas.
